Yes you are correct .. about convenio .

But theres a stony silence for other regions

Thats what i meant in last statement

But you implied autonomo was a back door to gaining residencia. This is not the way forward for early retirees..with pre existing conditions ..  or is it?

Is autonomo not set 265 per mnth ?

Thanks for speedy reply

Autónomo starts at 66,00 € for first 12 months, going up to 166,00 € for 6 months and increasing every 6 months thereafter until full amount of 350,00 € is reached after 3 years; However there is a move afoot for Autónomo to be means tested and amount paid pegged in regards to what you earn.

Autónomo is most certainly not a back door - it is the Spanish equivalent of national insurance and is paid if you are employed - either on contract or self-employed.  It gives you unemployment benefits after 6 months of payment and a basic pension after 15 years of payment

Hola Beauly,

You don’t have to be employed or self-employed to pay Autónomo - you can elect to pay.  Like I say, the cost is EVENTUALLY 325,00 € per month, but starts off at 77,00 € per month for the first 12 months, and rises incrementally every 6 months thereafter until the full amount is reache...

...d after 3 years paying.  Only one needs to pay for both to be covered.

With regards medication, if the medication is on the list of subsidised medications, then you pay around 30% of the cost. The list of subsidised medications is apparently shrinking each year, but if your medication is listed - about 30% of cost.  You need a prescription from your GP here in Spain.

Hope that helps

Hi Dario

I know this post is a few years old now, but is it still the case that you don't have to be employed or self-employed to pay Autonomo, you can elect to pay it ?  We are not moving out until late next year (god willing) but this would seem a better way of getting health cover than going private, as my husband has pre-existing health conditions and I understand private insurance won't cover anything pre-existing.

Thanks in advance.

Kerry

Hi Kerry - I'll have to check up on that now.  The rules and regulations have changed so much over the last couple of years that I am now just not sure.

If you haven't got residencia though, and I am assuming you haven't as you say you are not moving out until late next year, then you will be obliged to pay for private health just to get your Visa to move here - you won't be granted a visa without proving health cover and you can't pay into the Spanish system from UK, or indeed without first having residency.  You will be obliged to show valid health cover for the validity of the visa, which is initially one year.

I think you will find that you will have to take out private health to get the visa to migrate here, then after one year, you would probably be better off paying into the Convenio Especial, as it will work out cheaper than Autónomo

Thanks Dario, your advice is really appreciated.  I should have mentioned that I have an Irish passport, so will be able to bypass the visa application process, I think !!!  We are both 60, so will be 61 by the time we move and will have to pay for insurance, private or otherwise, until pensions kick in.  I understand convenio goes up once we reach 65, so wasn't sure if Autonomo would be a better option, as  my husband's pre-existing conditions would be covered.

HAH!! Irish passport - Enhorabuena then :-D that is very good news indeed.

Now as far as I am aware, Convenio Especial DOES cover pre-existing conditions, but again you have to be here one year at least.  It will still work out cheaper than paying Autonómo - and I’m still not certain if you can pay into it without being employed or self-employed
