We have had our apartment for 2 and a bit years and find the time we come out in the winter extremely cold. We have air con heating,  extra oil roads, blankets,  hot water bottles etc.

One of the reasons is that our apartment is at the side of the community and is face on for any wind, we have brown pvc shutters, which have been there a few years as the locks are going and then the original wooden patio doors and windows, these still look good and are no issue in Summer but do have gaps which let the cold air blow in in Winter.

Thinking it may just all need replacing with double glazing,  the same as we have in the UK. Is this something others have experienced and resolved?

We have an electric blanket on the bed and shut of the rooms that we aren't using in the evening so that we are only heating the rooms we are in.  heavy curtains at the windows may help keep the heat in new windows and doors aren't cheap and the buildings in Spain are constructed from those red bricks and render usually so not the most efficient system to retain heat.

we also use microwavable bean bags to heat up and put on our feet as they feel the cold on the floor area as our ducted system puts the heat in to the ceiling areas and heat rises!  it is only for a few weeks in the winter months so we cope with it and await the sunshine again.

Of course are you restricted to when you can come now if you are not residents you'll have to plan what 90 days you will be able to come for.  it's pretty cold at the moment but at least we don't have the snow they had in Madrid!

Many thanks Alicia. We already have most of this apart from the electric blankets so they will be on our purchase list when we are next allowed out to visit.  All this seems so old fashioned though and takes me back to my childhood when things were hard and our family poor but we know differently now. We do take for granted our luxuries in UK winters such as central heating and double glazing but appreciate the cold spell is normally only for a short time in Spain.

I still work full-time in UK so don't get anywhere near the chance of spending 90 days in Spain so that is not an issue for us. In a few years maybe but we would not consider months in Spain over the Spanish winter because of the cold nights.

Good news is that this week Natural Gas are looking to install gas piping into our community and early takers will have a water boiler so perhaps longer term we can incorporate gas heating. I think our doors are something that need changing as well so if anyone does have any recommendations???
