If you intend to spend more than 90 days in any 180 here, then yes, you will need to apply for residency.  You will first need to apply for a visa from the embassy in UK, at which point you will have to prove your financial means for 1 year (400% of IPREM) as well as health cover etc.

If or when a visa is granted, you will then within 30 days of arrival in Spain, make application for your TIE.

At the one year point, you will be required to renew your Visa - this will be for 2 years, so financial proof will need to be 400% of IPREM x 2.  After 2 years, you will again need to renew visa and prove 400% of IPREM x 2.  After that, when you get to 5 year mark, you’re a permanent resident

“IPREM” is the financial indicator of minimum wage.  Currently 537,62€ per month if memory serves, so taken annually, 400% of IPREM is around 26.000€ giver or take.  Value in Sterling will be dependent on exchange rate, BUT Embassy should now have all that information to hand online.

Health care provider I really don’t know.  I can suggest only either Liberty Seguros or Santander Bank because I know they do health cover, however I have no idea of value for money or extent of cover; hopefully others with much more experience will jump in.

Sorry to jump in here, after the five years and becoming a permanent resident do you need to continue private health insurance or do you qualify to free medical care? Stewert.

I’m not completely certain - hoping that someone who is permanent resident can answer, but my understanding is that once you become a permanent resident, you are entitled to State health care - but like I say, I’m really not 100% certain.

It used to be once you reached state pension age in the UK that you could get your S1 to entitle you to go onto the Spanish Health system. My husband and 1 retired to Spain he was 62 I was 57 once he reached 65 we were both able to go onto the system me as a dependent.

Thank you Jas, very helpful. We intend to do the same, as I am a toyboy (2years younger than the wife lol) would i be a dependent when she reaches retirement age? Not sure if that's how it works, if I have to carry on paying for private health care so be it. Stewert.
