I actually bank with Nationwide in U.K. but got a Starling card specifically because it gives me a euro option at a much lower rate of exchange than usual.  It works by having one card which can be used for both Sterling and Euros, and you move cash from the Sterling account into the euro ac...

...count through the app for a conversion fee of 0.4% on the current exchange rate.  There’s no other fee to pay unless you get charged by a Spanish bank for cash withdrawal.  As it’s a debit card - although I gather overdrafts are now possible- getting hold of the card is quick and easy as long as you’re comfortable using an app based account.

Could also recommend Wise which equally gives multi-currency accounts, is free (i.e. no subscription), has competitive rates for conversion and gives you a free card (plus an electronic one for Apple Pay / Wallet / Android equivalent) ... it also has the benefit that it can be used as a proper Bank Account, paying Direct Debits etc

Hi again DarioMartin and thanks for your latest contribution.

Will include the "Wise" account in my research too.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Paddy.

Suspect Wise and Starling are pretty similar - both allow direct debits (although DDs for Spanish utilities normally insist on a Spanish bank).  Both en

able you to use them in a wallet on your phone, although I’m not sure you can deposit cash and cheques with Wise which you can with Starling.  Rates of transfer on Starling may be marginally better depending on amounts involved.  Starling has the benefit of protection under the Financial Services Compensation scheme which I don’t think Wise has, but on the other hand Wise also offers dollar transfers which could be useful if going to USA.  Wouldn’t mind betting you can get your Wise card within a couple of days of completing the online application, just as you can with Starling.

I’ve not seen how the Wise app works but it may well be similar to Starling which shows details of exactly what I’ve spent where as soon as it leaves your account - as a result I use Starling for day to day expenditure in U.K. as well as Spain as it makes checking my accounts and expenditure so much easier.

Open a Chase Account before you come and bring a few euros for emergency. 1% cashback on all spending and top exchange rate. Works fine for contact less payments.

LOL  Correct!  I don't!!

Not sure how that would effect the availability of ATM's in the Las Marinas area which was the basis of my original post ....... however ........ we are travelling from the UK.

Cheers.

Paddy.
