Hi there.  New member here preparing for 3 months in Vera Playa (Las Marinas) from mid-January through to mid-April, ie, 90 days, Thank You Brexit!!  :(

On researching the area, it seems that reliable ATM's are a bit rare and we're wondering how folks there get access to cash when required??  I know we live in the age of contactless cards, G-pay, etc but it's still necessary to have a few euros in your pocket for the occasional pint and a paper, so, how's it done??  Are the Spanish banks ok with doing counter transactions for "customers" who don't have accounts with them.  Can you get "Cash Back" on card transactions at supermarkets??  What other ways are there of getting access to a few euros as and when required and the ATM's are empty or kapput??

Cheers in advance,

Paddy & Dawn.

What leads you to believe ATMs are a problem?  There’s a plethora of machines in Vera Pueblo, Garrucha and I believe a fair few at Las Buganvillas / Consum … if you’re not fussy about which machine you use, you’ll find plenty of working ATMs.

I’ve never seen cash back offered here, and as long as you don’t mind waiting up to 30 minutes in a queue, most banks will oblige you for over the counter - although that depends entirely on the staff in the individual branch at the time.  One may happily process your request, but on a different day another one may send you away saying that it’s “not possible”

Easier to use one of the many ATMs about

Hi DarioMartin - Thank you for your reply.

As I said in my original post  -  Research  -  On Tripadvisor (Although I'm not too sure who does around reviewing ATM's??)

Again, thanks for your response and clearing things up for me.

Have a Good 'Un

Be aware some banks will charge you to use another banks atm.

I'm with Sabadell and that's the case. Also their branch in Mojacar is only open, I believe,  now just 1 day a week ( was 2 days earlier on in the year). They did have an atm at Puerto Rey (a stand alone atm) but that's now gone.

Martin.

Cheers Martin  -  Yeah, one of the 1000's of ways banks find to screw the average Joe over.

I usually draw out the maximum I can at any one time in order to minimise the charge as a percentage of the overall transaction.

Hi Paddy and Dawn

Most places seem to happily take contactless payments, even for a pint and a paper. I tend to only use cash for tips, taking my euros back and forth to Spain with me nowadays.

However, as noted, there doesn't seem to be any problem with ATMs if needed.

No till at Bouganvillas, Puerto Rey or Villaricos and I believe the one behind Consum was vandalized.  Three tills in Palomares many on the main square with parking in Vera and in Mojacar.   Never heard of anywhere doing cash back.   Easiest way to get cash is to pick some up at the till (never the exchange kiosk) at the airport.   I agree you need cash here especially for small things like a coffee or drink.   Enjoy your stay.

You’ll have no problem with using U.K. cards in bank ATMs . I’d suggest you don’t use the private company ATMs as they tend to charge fees for cash withdrawals.  Pretty much all bar s restaurants and supermarkets take cards and use contactless

Before coming check out best accounts - might be worth setting up a euro account and some banks are very competitive eg Chase in the U.K.

My Canadian cards work in the tills and elsewhere.   Of course there is a fee if it is not the issuing bank the same as most places.

Thanks Andy, appreciate the info.

I know what you mean about card and contactless payments but, alas, I am a dinosaur and like a bit of the folding stuff in my pocket, if only for the "incidentals".

Have a great day,

Paddy.
