Travelling with your dog by car from Calais to VP

although slightly cheaper doing your route,would you not be better of for doggy and you to go Portsmouth Bilbao then only1 night stopover

The pet friendly cabins are as rare as hens teeth. There are kennel slots but as he has never been in kennels -too traumatic. Also dogs have to be muzzled in the exercise areas and he is not used to that.Easiest option is Eurotunnel

No problems getting dog friendly hotels on the French side - Ibis and Premiere Classe allow dogs for a small fee 

Hotel ASTorrent are on the motorway at Barcelona and Valencia and allow dogs

We found several air b and bs that are dog friendly. There is a filter you can use to find the accommodation.

We do this route regularly back and forth. Never had a problem finding dog friendly accommodations in France or Spain. All of the Ibis group allow dogs. we’ve found it much better than using the ferries. The dog is with you all the time.

We normally stop near Montélimar in France (between Avignon and Valence). There are plenty of pet friendly hotels but the one we've used is B&B Hôtel Nord. It's basic but clean and really well situated next to the A7/E15 (see B&B icon on map). The parking's next to the building with CCTV. The room's on the ground floor, you can arrive at night and enter a door code if necessary. You can walk the dog safely around the grounds. Montélimar is about 15km to the south and really nice to walk around with a lovely park and lots of open air restaurants. It's a long, long drive up to Montélimar from Vera (12hrs ish) but is halfway if you're only stopping over one night. I'd book it on Booking.com as it might be cheaper.

Forgot to add, the dog can come into the room with you.

Thanks to all those that gave advice on this topic. 

We took the western route down from Calais stopping just south of Poitiers in a Best Western Hotel that was dog friendly and in a rural setting with a wooded area. The dog was allowed in the room.  The route down was very rural, quiet and scenic with plenty of little "Aires" rest stops with toilet facilities and areas to walk the dog. Travelling on, skirting Bordeaux, we hit the non-existent French/Spanish border and did find difficulty finding both roadside stops and dog friendly stopovers. Eventually found one on the edge of Pamplona that was happy to accept the dog in the room and was opposite a park area on a hill. Did Pamplona to VP in one go. Dog handled it all very well indeed.
