Hello all,

My vet in England kindly advised that if I wanted to avoid the hideous cost of repeated animal health certificates (after Brexit ) every time I spend time in spain, to get a pet passport in Spain.

Has anyone persued this line and any local recommendations?

Thanks everyone.

Paul

Whilst the EU Pet Passport isn’t recognised in the UK (From what I recall) and UK Vets won’t add vaccinations etc to them, if you get it updated by a vet in Spain, it will of course mean a much MUCH reduced cost for you when you come here.

Any Vet will do it, and as you list “Vera Playa” as your base here, you can visit Aert Jorna at Vet Care Vera Playa, opposite Consum in Vera Playa or I can recommend Ellen at CliniVet in Turre.  I’m sure there are many other great Vets around, those are just the two I have experience of and can recommend

Thanks so much. You're a diamond.

As I recall, from previous posts, you have 3 cats? so I'll take your advice! I guess if the passport is issued in Spain and I travel to the EU area from UK through France it makes no difference. I can ask at the vet, I guess.

Correct - as it’s an EU Pet Passport, it’s operative the moment you get into the EU

We travel twice a year to and from the uk from Spain and travel via car with our dog.

From the UK you must have a UK health certificate for your pet to get into the EU. It’s hideously expensive and only good for a single trip, so if multiple trips are happening you need to get a EU pet passport.

We got one for our dog. Initially it cost approximately 30euros for the document and another 30euros for the rabies vaccination.

The passport lasts for 12 months and is good for as many crossings as required. To return to the UK each time our dog is required to have a worming tablet and your EU vet must supply it and put the relevant stamp in the passport. It’s not expensive.

Importantly, the vet will carry out a quick health check of your dog and records that too in the passport.

So, the passport will have three stamps, rabies, worming tablets and health checks. It is essential that the stamp is also signed by the vet otherwise you may have problems at the UK border.

I fully recommend that if you’re regularly travelling with your dog between the UK and EU to get a pet passport. The initial cost will be higher because you’ll have to pay for a UK health certificate to get to the EU and then you will be paying an additional 60 or 80euros for the pet passport. However, subsequent costs are much lower.

We use Clínica Veterinaria Garrucha.

Good luck
