Hi, just add our twopenneth.

Just where the poster gets "lots of prosecutions from I've no idea.

You can bring your RHD UK plated vehicle and drive it for 6 months, after which you are required by Spanish law to have it what they call "matriculated" which basically means you swap your UK mot for the Spanish equivalent called the ITV, if your car is younger than 10 years old at time of matriculation the new ITV is good for 2 years, you get a sticker which states the date of renewal, over ten years old the ITV needs renewing every year. As wel as having it put onto Spanish number plates.

We used CAT Services in La Alfoquua for the information and "The Garage" on the way to Albox did everything to get partners car to Pre ITV standard which firstly involved checking headlamps, some modern vehicles headlamp beams are switchable right to left etc, if they dont then you need to get LHD headlamps, partners Honda Insight Hybrid had to have new ones at approx €€495 each !! Once checked and serviced they took the car to the ITV testing staion at Lorca, we got it back with all the documentation, drove to the town hall, ayuntimento at Zurgena, paid the €30 road tax fee, drove to Albox for new number plates and were street legal.

Ok you will most likely have your Residencia, Padron and NIE if you bought a place, or even rent, the car will need to have a valid UK MOT taxed and insured, after ITV you'll need to get insurance when needed, your old UK MOT will be invalid, if you want to go back to the UK with your car, the ITV and number plates are ok. Again for up to three montgs.

You'll need to inform the DVLA about matriculation or you may get an £80 fine as partner just got on a flying visit for a few days but this is just a mix up between cat servuces and the DVLA.

From getting the information and documents you need, I'd advise using the garage or some other organisation that offers the Matriculation service, its just easier tho you can do it yourself, you would deffo need an interpreter/translator if you dont speak Spanish to a good standard.

Best of luck. Btw, we moved in late March last year and drove around for just short of the 6 month maximum before having the matriculation done, never got stopped once.

You told Deborah her ITV would be ok in Uk for up to 3 months, is that correct, as the insurance companies allow you to take a Spanish car to UK for up to 6 months.  Uk insurance only allows 3 months in Spain .

Sorry folks but im finding this all very confusing, We were told cars in Spain were very expensive so it would be better for the purse to buy in the UK and take over? I currently have Motability in the UK so would appreciate the right advice so i know what's best to do, it will need to be a used car that we buy.

many thanks carol

caz you have been correctly informed about spanish cars being more expensive, just to give u an example, someone i know has just purchased a vehicle for 2500 euro , same vehicle in uk £500

but on a whole the lower valued vehicles seem to be 3 to 4 times dearer but when you increase value the difference does tend to get nearer.

example 9000 euro against £5000 is a pretty good guide.

we have just matriculated ours at the total cost of 2500 inc headlights and itv

hope this helps

Hi deb, to go back to youre original post, I dont know where you got the information about not being able to get an ITV for an English vehicle but that's rubbish.

Partner and I drove her Rhd Honda Insight hybrid down here last March, 2017, drove it around for the allowed 6 months I think and using the garage near Albox/Arboleas then got it thru the ITV without any problems.

Moneywise its probably more cost effective to try and get a lhd vehicle in the UK even tho prices vs rhd may be a bit higher but it would still have to have an ITV eventually.

You might drop on a Spanish registered lhd vehicle which would obviate the headlamp issue, but it's not mandatory to have a lhd car in Spain.

I have recently bought a Spanish matriculated peugeot 206 in the uk for £1,750. Obviously it is quite old and mechanical parts may require replacing in the near future but the body is was perfect until some one bumped me in the uk. pm if you want details of where i bought, You may get a part exchange deal fromim?
