Irish move to Spain
Hi people, can anyone clear up my confusion over Irish people coming to live in Spain, how long can I stay?
If you possess an Irish Passport you can stay in Spain as long as you wish but on the 183rd day in a calendar year the Spanish authorities will expect you to pay Income Tax on your world earnings in Spain.
But, if you are holidaying there in the long term it would make sense to spend no more than the 182 days in any rolling year.
How do you Calculate your Stays in Spain? - Easy buy two calendars straddling two years and simply mark off each day or part of day you spend in Spain.
Enjoy Spain, there are those who will envy your stay entitlements.

You are not bound by the 90 / 180 limit that now restricts visitors from the UK; however it must be noted that if you as an EU Citizen spend longer than 90 days in Spain, you are expected to register as being resident in Spain. This is not something widely adhered to, nor in reality enforced.
As Matthew has pointed out, if you hit the 183 day mark, you become tax resident and liable to pay tax in Spain on worldwide income.
If you are only coming here as a non-resident and not intending on taking residency, then DO NOT register on the Padrón of the Ayuntamiento in the area you stay. Going on the Padrón is a statement that this is your primary place of residence - it makes you “Quasi-resident” and that can have tax implications.
