Hi Chrissie, what is it called and which shop in Arboleas please? Just a bit worried you say about it attracting thousands of flies, does this not add to the problem or does it move them to a different area? TIA.

Best wishes,

Paul.

Hi, we live in Velez Rubio and have experienced fly problems and smells. Certain areas are worse than others, private message us with the location of the house and we might be able to give you some advice.

Hi Paul,

OK, here comes a really long answer, I’m afraid, just to explain :-)

This product actually traps them, so you physically have less flies in your garden, and doesn’t cause more and more flies to come your way as it works only up to 10 metres.  Over that distance, flies can’t smell it. So this will work only on flies who would naturally enter your garden.

I bought mine from Amazon.co.uk before we left home for Spain, and we packed it on the removals van in pride of place....I was sure that this was going to be a valuable bit of kit, and so it is.  I bought the brand called The Buzz Fly Catcher and came across it by chance as I was researching and ordering stuff to protect me from mosquitos, as I’m really allergic.  I ordered this to try it, and I’m so glad I did.

The Buzz seems to work by trapping flies from around the area outside the house, attracting them to the trap with a pungent smell that mimics rotting flesh.  Nice!  (We don’t put it too close to the house, or we’d get a strong whiff of it too often!)  It takes at least 24 hours for the sachet of powder to break down in the water to activate it, so if you buy one, don’t expect it to start really working for a couple of days.  It can’t attract flies beyond 10 metres, so it cannot make your garden a magnet for every fly in town, only those that are within smelling distance of your bottle traps.  That’s why you will notice the fly problem diminishing, as the bottle simply traps and keeps the flies inside it, and you then have less flies to enter the house.  You end up with a plastic container absolutely FULL of dead flies.

I bought a few bottles plus refills, but initially only put up one on the first week of June. It worked really well, as I sited it between the pool and the kitchen door.  Heaven!  I then noticed that one bottle alone wasn’t totally controlling the flies on the other side of the pool, so I put another one up strategically placed by hanging from a shrub there and within 48 hours, it was really noticeable that I wasn’t being pestered by flies at all, even with food in hand.  Experience over the last 6 weeks has told us when to top up with more water or use a new refill, as the flies start pestering again.

My husband drained our two jars just today, and I admit it’s an icky, smelly job, but as it’s the only solution we’ve come across it’s really worth it.  He uses empty plastic milk bottles to catch the liquid, and a pair of rubber gloves. Don’t spill it on the ground or you’ll unleash the smell across the area and it takes ages to disappear. We funnel the liquid and flies into a big milk bottle, screw on the cap and throw it in the roadside refuse bin. Easy peasy!

Last week, I was surprised to see a similar product on sale in Arboleas at the Brico DIY place (the one that’s coloured bright yellow, just past the Bowling Alley). It’s not the same brand, but it’s in a similar bottle with separate refills available too.  Not sure of the price, sorry, but it’s around 10 euros I think.

Sorry for the long answer, but I hope this helps. Several friends have followed us in buying these, and they too say they are great.  Just to be clear, we haven’t got any connection to this company or product.....I just thought someone out there might be glad of my tip to use attractants to get rid of these pesky nuisance flies.

Hi, many thanks for that, think we will give it a try. Sorry to ask again but what is it called and is it in the gardening department?

Best wishes,

Paul.

I’m going there this morning for something else, so I will take note of where it is and a photo of it and post it. :-)

Warm regards,

Christine

We have found a wonderful property in Velez Rubio, however, apparently it is next to a pig farm. Is there many pig farms in the area and what are the down falls living next to one

Thanks in advance

Cliff

Hi, we know where this property is, and yes it overlooks a large pig farm , about 300m away.

You would definately be able to smell it, especially when the wind is in that direction, and I would think there would be flies.

This does reflect in the price though, as it is a lovely villa.

Hi. Bob and Sandra again.

As Oz says in order to get to our cottage you need to drive through.the.village. so we are 2.4km from thethe nearest.pig farm & yet when in the wind is up the.mountain we still get a, whiff. Spain is dust and flies & without our fly free zones we would be locked in the cottage.

The heart wants what.the heart wants but patently the low price is indicative of its position & negatives. At that distance you would also hear them screaming.

Buy in haste, repent at leisure.

Think everything has been said.
