I am non-resident but own a holiday home near Velez Blanco. I'm thinking of trying to buy a cheap (<1000 euros) second hand car that I can use when in Los Velez and would appreciate any advice and guidance anyone can offer as to how to go about doing this.

Think you might need to spend more for one that's reliable

The problem you may face is registering the car, as you may be asked for a Padrón.  As a non resident you *must not* go on the Padrón

Hi dario when I bought my Spanish car and registered it as a none resident.I was not asked to go on the padron! that only involves being a resident and as I'm not, only a holiday home owner(tourist) it's irrelevant buying a second hand car I found.

Hope this helps Clive p.

It does depend where you buy from - some garages will request a Padrón as well as a NIE

Thanks for the helpful replies - looks like a private sale would be the way forward. I will post a car wanted message on the buying and selling forum - can anyone recommend any other online buying/selling websites in Almeria/Murcia (I have used Gumtree and Facebook in the UK).

Hi dario,I'm a bit confused on this.

Why would a garage ask for a padron from a none resident when buying a car when it's well documented that you don't need a padron as a holiday home owner and like you said ITS ill advertised to go on it for tax purposes?

So would a garage refuse to sell you a car if you didn't have it,?.I no all about the  NIE,everyone in Spain has one as a resident/home owner.i would have thought that was enough as that's all I needed when registering mine.

Yes - some (ill informed possibly?) garages will refuse to complete the sale without a Padron, and may even offer the even worse advice for a non-resident to obtain a Padron  because it doesn’t matter or whatever.

It’s pretty typical for Spain though where there is even confusion at official levels as to what constitutes residency, whether a green card is valid etc etc.  I think it comes down to too many different oficiales / funcionarios (or in this case car salesmen) interpreting the rules to the best of their understanding, instead of to an official view
