Hi Jenni,

Thanks for the response.

I was typing ‘regards’ but somehow when I had R. E. G. typed I hit ‘post’ lol. My name is Mel.

My question was if you had no way of helping both, man or beast. If it had to be one or the other..

look forward to your next...

Mel

LOL so sorry, that is very funny. anyway Hi Mel.

Well it would be Beast, for the reasons I have stated previously, animals cannot help themselves, people can.

Have a good weekend.

Regards  Jenni

Hi Jenni,

Thanks for the response.

Firstly, I do not have the means to open a sanctuary for homeless people, and if I did , I would be physically incapable of doing too much due to serious health issues. My limits would be buying food etc for a destitute, or driving them to some places where. hopefully, they would be treated with as much compassion as an animal would be in my local area. Seeing that no such place seems to exist is a terrible indictment to society.

I would hope that your residence is detached and a good distance from your immediate neighbors, as from what you describe, your home would appear to be nothing less than an animal sanctuary . I cannot commend you being like this, because if you have close neighbors you will have reduced their quality of life. Anyone living with 19 animals in a private residence would be considered eccentric by most people. It cannot be beneficial for your own health and safety.

The other day a baby hare came hopping across the road in danger of me running him over. I brought my car to a halt and allowed him to hop away to be safe in his natural habitat in the campo. I consider that kind of action by people more meaningful than the hysteria I observe with ‘animal lovers’. Dogs and cats should live in their natural habitat fending for themselves.

Research has shown that inter human relations demand love and caring in two directions... you give and you take. Not so in a relationship with a dog. He will ‘love’ and wag his tail for whoever feeds him, even a  paedophile or necrophile. So it suits people who have difficulties with human relationships to have ‘relationships ‘ with animals. Dogs were mutated to be ‘dependent ‘ on humans, or maybe they are smart enough to make humans think so. They would be well able to fend for themselves if left to do so. Did you ever stop and consider  a scenario where you, unfortunately, had a fall, was injured and incapable of summoning help. Your 19 animals, when their bowls were empty, would happily eat you. This has happened before and will happen again. I don’t see a hobo eating you in similar circumstances.

I was very tempted to ignore this diatribe Mel, but thought I would give you just one more reply. Although I don't feel the need to justify the way I live, I will tell you I live within 12 acres of land far away from any neighbours. So your concern over mine and their well being is not necessary.  My house is a sanctuary to any animal. Your views on cats and dogs disgust me. Therefore I do not wish to continue this conversation, please do not reply.

This is not a reply to Jenni, I could find no other way to continue with my thread.

No normal person would give preference to an animal over a human being. In a local freebie magazine, the classifieds had four entries for animal charities and one for people..i.e. Macs Cancer Support. Only a misanthropist could say that this is normal. Has the world gone mad?

Carol, who did you ask?

I asked a lady I knew who does quite a lot with the church..I thought she would know if anyone would...There was no one to turn too....The church just dished out food once a week...all very good...but seemed more like " look at us arnt we great" type of place...but real help for real homeless people...no...none...Yet if a homeless person was a dog it would be plastered all over FB with a please help banner....I find that strange...because trust me ...not all homeless people are to blame for thier predicament...I know from personal experience that is not the case...

I do not live in Spain.  Sounds from all this as if there are lots of kind people prepared to drive a homeless person to a place of refuge set up by someone else, or hand out means for one meal, or berate 'them ' for not 'doing something', or helping animals only - but no one with a spare bedroom?

...droom?

I would love to be able to do that, however, I am receiving chemotherapy for the past 27 months and physically unable to do more than what you mention. I come from Dublin and we have no shortage of places, run by the state, religious bodies and charities where a person in need would get a hot dinner, a warm bed, a shower and breakfast in the morning. I personally only know of 2 animal welfare organizations in a city of 1.2 million. I feel that this proportion of people and animal welfare places appropriate. Yes of course there are semi lunatics that would have 20 cats in her terraced house. I know one such unfortunate, in Dublin, and she is known to all and sundry as ‘that mad cat aul wan’.

I started this thread to invite a discussion  of the attitude of the so called ‘animal loving’ group in the area where I live. In a small town there are all kinds of animal rescue groups as well as self appointed ones. They are quite irresponsible in their modus operandi as regards to the effect of fostered/rehoused animals have on the neighbors of the fosterer/adoptive owners. eg an English aquaintance of mine went on an interview to offer her voluntary service to PAWS in the scope of her administrative/accounting skills and came home , to her apartment, with 6 puppies! I asked her if PAWS had enquired as to the suitability of her home to foster 6 pups  as regards her immediate neighbors and she said that they did not care. I personally have endured the continuous barking and whining of dogs in apartments adjoining me. When I tried to highlight the negative points of animals. ie noise, smell, disease, shite on pavements, dogs in restaurants eating off plate.. etc , I was attacked shrilly by this group and accused of being an animal hater.

I wish such enthusiasm and energy was directed towards the well being and comfort of humans.

Hi there, I completely understand where you are coming from, maybe it's because I am a Dubliner too! I was completely gobsmacked by the amount of animal shelers/  second hand charities for animals ect since I got to Spain. I worked in many a homeless organisation in Ireland some people homeless with addiction issues / mental health problems. I have met very few people who choose to be homeless. I am retired now having devoted 28 years to homeless/ mental health / addictive personsand live in rented accomadation. I would still volunteer my help to the homeless in a heartbeat. Thank you for highlighting  the issue

Dear Captango and Jenni,

I can see by your posts that you both have great passion for your corner, whether it be homeless dogs or people, and you keep your passion despite personal challenges which is true bravery. Your humanity and caring not only does you both great credit but also brings these issues to the attention of the rest of us who are so preoccupied that they don't always notice the suffering endured by both mankind and animals, well done and please keep up the great work. I would count it an honour to have friends like you; the most I have ever done is given a modest donation to St Martin in the Fields and the RSPCA, which compared to your enthusiasm and practical assistance is but a pebble, this I believe is probably the same for the majority.

You have my warmest regards and respect,

Paul

Thanks Paulj, kind words but not necessary, I use to work at St Martins in the Field many years ago.   But it came as a great shock to me that from 22.00 everyone was turned out into the night, whether they had a a place to go or not, One particular night was snowing and freezing and I was going home on the tube to my nice warm bed, and this did not sit comfortably with me at all, and I  had to leave, I took the cowards way out really, because I was unable to do anything about it. I did try. The reason for turning people out into the night was because the church wasn't insured for the people to stay over night. As I said this was many years ago, so I hope now things have changed and people are allowed to stay over night.

Stay Safe jenni
