I live in the Turre area. There are many people purporting to be ‘animal lovers’ and I will expand on that point as this topic develops. Another  fb forum which is supposedly for the benefit of the community in Turre, is dominated by pictures and news of mangy dogs.

Enough for the moment about dogs. Should I encounter a homeless person, who is destitute, needs help, shelter and food, but isn’t ill to the extent that I need to bring him/her to A&E, where in Turre would I bring him/her where they would at least be treated as well as a dog? Is there a shelter or charity that would help an unfortunate person like this.

I was asking about the homeless people as well....I have a personal interest in homeless people...and I too found that everywhere I asked I was greeted by appeals for homeless dogs...!!...If only homeless people were treated as well as dogs and before I get deluged with dog lovers not all people want to be homeless, not all people who are homeless are drug taking drunks and you are a breath away from being homeless at every stage of your life....working with homeless people in the UK I know this to be true...and many homeless have mental illness...which is overlooked many many times...Captango7653 I asked for help with homless people here, and got no where...yet a billion people want to help a dog or cat....beyond my comprehension really Im afraid...

Not all homeless people are homeless, difficult to tell sometimes, we used to give to a pleasant man with a dog at mercadonna ?, (either dog food or money), on route to Garrucha from Vera on the left, not badly dressed and the dog looked in good health but with all the donations they received from kind customers they should be.

Months and months later after constantly giving we saw him at a different supermarket checkout with a trolley full of goods and bags of cat litter, he saw us but looked away even though when giving to him pleasant broken conversation took place, he would even help my wife carry bags to the car when she was in her own, dont know if he was getting into his car as diddnt follow him out.

Why do you need bags of cat litter ? and food to be cooked in a kitchen ? if your homeless,

I think we were scammed which is a pity for real homeless people as we are now reluctant to give any aid, this should be policed but they have better things to do,

We know the man, outside Mercadona , Puerto Rey. We have given him food from time to time as well. He may very well be a lazy malingerer and then again, he may have problems not visible to us.

My issue is that the ‘animal lovers’ are oversubscribed, at least here in Turre. There are organizations like paws and other charities who are totally irresponsible in the manner in which they rehouse or foster strays. There are self appointed ‘rescue teams’ including one in a camper parked illegally with 2 grown dogs and 8 pups! Can you imagine the squalor and the poor residents who live where these idiots parked. When the police moved them on, the mayor of Turre was attacked very shrilly via forum by a cynophile psychotic. I too had abuse from the same person when I posted pictures of dog excrement all over the pavements of Turre.

If 20% of this zeal was diverted by these people towards organized help to needy humans, it would be commendable. Sadly I think that you are dealing with a misanthropic bunch.

Goodness me you have raised an emotive subject here.  I am an animal lover I have 9 dogs and 10 cats all rescue some were horribly abused.

In the UK I was a social worker, and came across a cross section of homeless and have empathy for them.

But you should not criticize people that have decided to put their energy and money into dogs or cat rescue. If a person is genuinely homeless the best thing is if they are British to take them to the consulate where they will be given help to get back to the UK (perhaps not at the moment but in normal times).Where they will get help, very little help here in Spain for the homeless.

Dogs and cats need help because they are unable to help them selves and it is people either by ignorance or cruelty that they find themselves starving homeless etc.

I am not misanthropic I spent my working life helping abused children and homeless people, now in my retirement I choose something that is very close to my heart Animals.

If you are so hell bent on helping the homeless then that is a great thing, can I suggest you put your money where your mouth is and open your own homeless shelter. that you be wonderful!.

So , let’s clarify one point:

If you had limited resources and were faced with the dilemma of either helping a human or an animal, which one would you help?

I would love to engage in discussion with you as to the merits/ demerits if ‘animal welfare as you seem to be an articulate person.

Hello Reg,

I would help both. I would deal with the animal first, as that would be the easiest to get it off the street get it to a charity and or vets, or as I have done before taken it in.

I would then turn my attention to the person, as a person would sit still long enough and wait for help it could be explained to the person that help is coming.

Sadly with animals this is not the case, usually you get a one hit chance of catching the animal especially if it has been abused.

With an animal you can see honesty, you can see that it is in dire need of help. A rescued animal is a joy to see, the devotion and love they show is beautiful.

This is not the case with people unfortunately, as someone has written on here they helped what they thought was a homeless person only to find out he wasn't. So they felt they had been scammed. That's why I think the best ploy is to offer to take them to the British consulate where they will get help. If they refuse then I would be asking why they are refusing,!!!! There is a chap that before lockdown sat outside Lidl in Albox, he wasn't homeless, but had fallen on hard times, was finding it hard to pay his rent and buy food, I asked for his story and then made my decision, to donate a small amount, now you could argue this is wrong as he might spend it on booze or fags, and that I would be better to buy him food, well that's his choice that's his body, even if I gave him food he could sell that for booze and fags, who am I to dictate his life. If I don't like the idea of him selling food to buy something I don't agree with then I stop.

Because of the honesty of animals and the uncertainty of people I would choose animals every time.

Hi Jenni,

Thanks for the response.

I was typing ‘regards’ but somehow when I had R. E. G. typed I hit ‘post’ lol. My name is Mel.

My question was if you had no way of helping both, man or beast. If it had to be one or the other..

look forward to your next...

Mel
