Hi I would like some advice on how to obtain a social security number and tajecta de salud/sanatario? I have friends moving to turre in the next month and have been helping them to obtain nie but it was along time ago when I applied for my residencia in the canaries and I have found a lot has changed. I myself have never visited turre so I am unsure of were local town hall or police station is i have found one in mojacar is this the closest.? Do they have to have private health care before appling for an ss number? The have a child also so does this make it easier for them as they are enrolling him into school.  Any advice much appreciated.

Hi there - first off, they don’t need health cover for Seguridad Social; you can actually apply for SS on passport, but it’s only valid for 3 months.  Once you have NIE, applying for Número de Seguridad Social is just a matter of going to the TGSS office in Huércal-Overa, going to first floor, completing the application and handing it in when you are called to a desk.  They will each be given two forms with Número de Seguridad Social on them.  One is for an employer, the other is for a health Centre.

NOW ... the one for the health Centre will only be of use if they are going on to the Spanish health system - either by payment of Autónomo (by themselves or an employer) or by transfer of pension (that’s as it stands now - post Brexit? Who knows?)

To obtain Tarjeta de Sanitaria, they will need 1) Residencia, 2) Número de Seguridad Social, 3) Certificado de Empadronamiento, 4) Solicitud de inscripción en Salud Andalucía  ... here’s the bit they may not like; if they are not pensioners transferring benefits from U.K. and are either not self-employed or employed by a company here, then Autónomo is not being paid and they are therefore not eligible for Spanish Health system and will not receive a Tarjeta Sanitaria.  They will need to show either eligibility for Spanish health or that Private health cover has been obtained to be able to get Residencia in the first place ....

Hope this helps, Darío

Register with Seguridad Social, then get an Asesor/a to help you register as whatever it is you will be doing - this will make you “Alta” en Seguridad Social ... don’t bother running it through google translate :-D  there is no direct translation and it doesn’t mean “High” - it means that you are registered with Seguridad Social in your chosen profession or trade.  Once you have done that, you are Autónomo or self-employed and can then have Autónomo (yes, I know ... confusing, isn’t it?) debited from your nominated bank account.

Currently, it’s 66,00 € per month for first 12 months (50,00 € if you are under the age of 47), rising to 163,00 € for the next six months, then rising incrementally every 6 months thereafter until after 3 years you are paying the full amount of about 340,00€ per month.

I say currently because PSOE has the largest number of seats in last election and will likely form a coalition with the Left wing Podemos.  This is good news as one of their pledges is to have the current fixed-rate Autónomo struck down and rather be linked to your earnings - you earn less, you pay less.

Un saludo, Darío

Hi.  The best way to deal with everything they will need is to go see a Gestor who will advise them and in the end reduce any possible queuing as they will not see you at Huercal Overa without an appointment.  The NIE is needed before they can do any of this and they will also need to sign on to the Padron before they get their NIE.  Different areas in Spain do things differently.  Here in Turre we don´t go to the police station and need to acquire a Padron before anything else.  Hope this helps.  There is a town hall in Turre.  Ask you friend to pop into "Connections" shop at the main square and they will direct them.  They are English.  Good luck to your friends.
