Hi guys. Moving to Almeria early next year and, as I guess all that are in that situation are inclined to do, I spend a fair bit of time browsing t'Internet. 😊

I saw a post on a website recently that was critical of the level of crime in Almeria. It was suggested that this was due to the fact that southern Spain is closer to North Africa than other parts of the peninsula and therefore, presumably, has an immigration problem.

Has this been anyone's experience, or is this complete nonsense?

We have 2 properties here one being an isolated cottage. We have just had our stored motorhome badly vandalised.and contents stolen plus the cottage's Wind Turbine & Satellite Dish. In 2007 we had a 62,000€ burglary at same property. This time the property itself was untouched.

There are frequent local reports about pickpockets etc  with more serious crimes reported in the 2 local Brit language papers, Euro Weekly News and Sol Times both of which I think are on-line. However there is not the fear or incidence of personal harm, assault or injury that one fears in UK. Feel safer here than in UK.

Probably as many Brit neer-do-wells as others but your point may be a factor.

We live inland a bit, not far from Bob and Sandra, small commuinty within a small village. As opposed to the UK the street lights are on all night which gives you a sense of well being.

Most villas have window bars, rejas, security shutters alarms etc etc, talk of being close to nth Africa is silly, as Bob suggests there's as much probability criminals are white as much as black. No apologies for my stark language.

An empty holiday home close by was the subject of an attempted home invasion, at 7.30 -8pm but local neighbours, dogs and the security system thwarted whoever it was.

Local policia and Guardia Civil pop round a few times a week.

End of the day there are scum around and you can only do so much to thwart them short of turning youre home into a fortress.

Dont let the actions of a very small minority put you off coming to live in a great part of the world. Be realistic with youre new home.

Oh it wasn't going to put me off. Just wondering what people's experiences were. :)

Yes apparently police still patrol in Spain. That must be novel. Can't remember the last time I saw a copper on the beat 😕

Yes, they do patrol, sometimes just to make their presence known, other times as you'll notice at places like the carrefour up in Lorca they do a walking patrol, and they all carry weapons.

All very reassuring, sadly not in Bob's case albeit with Bob's place up in Puerto Lumbreras being a bit remote, greed and avarice drive criminals to extremes.
