I'm a keen gardener in Ireland. However, I have plants in Spain too. I'm interested in this thread. I've tried replanting cacti in Spain but failed on each occasion as each cactus died. When I try to reason why my replanting failed I think it is because the ground in which I replanted was too fine i.e. I put potting compost into the soil beforehand. I think I should have left the soil as it was i.e. pretty dry and neglected.

If you want to repot then you should use a lot of gravel in bottom of pot and then cactus specific compost on top of gravel and around top of pot and cactus. You can buy the compost at the garden centres in Vera. I have a large cactus that I bought in the UK about 20 years ago, it’s lived in Barcelona and now Vera I repot every 4 - 5 years and never had a problem. We water about once a week in summer and less frequently in winter.

@Matthew - I’ve never moved a cactus from pot to tierra firma, I suspect same criteria apply though dig hole and fill bottom with gravel to aid drainage then plant in cactus compost.

Most cacti are pretty hardy and will grow almost anywhere. I had a cycas that for whatever reason died so I just chucked it in a corner of the garden. After about a year it just sprouted and now it’s in its third flowering phase in a pot on my patio.

The over-riding message I'm getting here about caring for cacti is not to care for them on which they seem to flourish. Thanks Everyone.
