We were stopped, while walking our dog in the campo, yesterday by the Gaurdia Civil. They were on trail motorbikes. They told us that our dog must be on lead. We had already called her and put her on lead as soon as we heard motorbikes. They then demanded to see our passports and followed us back to the campsite in order to do so.

Yes Bob.
I think that you're lucky that they did not denounce you for not carying identification.

They also told another dog walker that his lead was too long.
We live just outside Oria, and we asked at the town hall about whether dogs had to be on leads when walking on the campo, they told us no, we could walk them off leads. perhaps if you had had your residencia cards with you, they might have been more understanding. Personally I see no problem in walking a well behaved dog off the lead.
I am a bit confused by this, as the Spanish dogs dont seem to be on leads, even in towns. Does this mean, you are never supposed to let your dog off it’s lead ever?
Hi,
Legally not aware but maybe a local decision. Am aware that the size & breed of dog is a factor.
One word of warning. Poisoned Baits laid by hunters for foxes, etc to decrease risk to Red-legged Partridge which the hunters then decimate/ massacre. Although totally illegal one sees year on year reports of owners' dogs being so affected & dying in agony.

Hi I am afraid its one rule for the Spanish and one for expats, the Spanish in my area never ever have their dogs on leads, it is different from area to area, so best check with your town hall, I would guess the reason Patp was stopped in the first place was someone complained.
