A lovely place Lynn; a tad too “busy” in the summer months for my taste, but spectacular none the less.

You’ll have a great community around you there and definitely a better winter than UK.  Pack away your big thick jackets and snow boots, they will never again be needed .....

Just to add two pennerth, as with the new years day comment we as a family had the luxury of Christmas day dinner around our big table out on the pool patio in really nice weather, Ok we get an occasional odour from a pig farm nearby but as soon as you realise it`s there it`s gone.

Yes we do get the occasional loss of water pressure and no water but it`s never for long.

To expect decent temps in winter is silly, it can and will get cold, we have an electric blanket, partner has a onesie but which can be as sexy as it might look silly,

It`s all about attitude, we can go out to eat in nice restaurants and have great food and wine very cheaply that you could never afford to do as much in the UK just as easy as you can go get half price pizza at a beach side pizzeria.

Bob has now sprung a 3rd property on me plus his/her motor home, two properties here, one in the UK and the ability to just up sticks and take off and go a wandering on a whim, oh to be so endowed. lol

We have a doctors surgery literally a few hundred yards away, small busy bar restaurant, we are 5 minutes form the motorway and 10 minutes from Huercal Overa, if you come with anything less than 100% commitment you`ll fail, simples

And then theres the road system, just why the Spanish lose the ability or common courtesy to indicate properly after passing the driving test is anyones guess but getting just about anywhere here is so easy as to be laughable when compared to traffic levels in the UK,

Oh get a diesel they said in the UK not long ago, now diesel is a dirty word, not here where diesel is just 1.14 euros per litre, no real worries about pollution because there aren't as many cars and lots more space.

Partner and myself love it here, loads of people get by with little to no Spanish and they are genuinely nice people.

Don't denigrate the Spanish way of life or it`s people, just because things didn't work out for you.

Forgive me for pointing it out but upon open the online edition of the Daily Mail saturday the front pages were awash with pictures up and down the UK of some kind of white powdery stuff causing almighty chaos with cars crashing, kids making balls of the white stuff, funny statues made with sticks and carrots for noses, trains being cancelled, and all whilst the temps here in Southern Spain were around the mid twenties lol. Each to their own !!

I wouldn’t normally weigh in on a discussion such as this; everyone has their opinion and is entitled to it.

But I find myself in agreement with Sportscar - attitude is everything.  We had a friend visit from overseas recently .... the things I found charming, quaint, uniquely Spanish .... he couldn’t handle.  The lack of lane discipline or use of indicators on roundabouts, cars just stoppin...

...g in the middle of the road and the driver nipping into the shops, or just stopping to chat to a friend .... and so on and so forth.  He also commented on “the language barrier”

What language barrier? It’s Spain.  The language is Spanish, ergo we learn the language!! But I digress.  Spain is not for everyone, it is mind-numbingly bureaucratic, and don’t expect things to happen in a hurry ....

But you’ll find “bad” in every country and let’s be honest, UK has its challenges, which is why a good proportion of us are here!! But the good in Spain far far outweighs the bad, with a much less stressful way of life, fabulous weather and very mild winters - well certainly here in Vera (New Years day saw me sitting on the deck in shorts and shirtless ... can’t quite remember the last time I was able to do THAT in UK on NYD!!)

Plus to my mind (AND THIS IS MY OPINION!!!!) the people maketh the country, and I love the Spanish.  I love their directness, laissez faire attitude, their sense of fun and joy and the endless fiestas..... for all those that say “BUT BUT BUT THE SPANISH ARE .....” this is what I have found - my interactions have all been overwhelmingly positive, from shops through Ayuntamiento, Correos, Extranjeros and the the customers at the bar I work.

Look, this is rambling a bit (ok, a lot!!) but what I’m trying to say is that it is easy to see the negative, to take everything that happens as “bad” and be disheartened, but to provide balance, if you come here with an open mind, accept Spain as it IS, not as you would want it to be, accept the people as they are and try to integrate, you really will have a fabulous time.

There WILL be rough times - but like I said, the good here far far far outweighs the bad.  Spain is our home; we don’t maintain a house anywhere else in the world nor do we intend to.  This is where we want to be, permanently.

To Raygil - I am truly sorry that your experience was not a positive one - perhaps in another area, who knows?

To others considering Spain - do not be put off.  Atiitude is everything, it’s a beautiful place with beautiful people and if you allow it, you really will enjoy life here

Saludos, Darío

You deserve to be happy anywhere with your philosophy/attitude.

Ola all,

Reading this made me want to join in the conversation. Currently we have property which we use for as a holiday home in San Juan.

I love the place because it is Spanish! People are friendly, especially when they see I am trying hard to speak in Spanish, after that is the language.

When we brought the property our estate agent were so friendly and gave us tips, still very helpful. We also went to the local council to register, speaking literally no Spanish they tried so hard even got couple of staff who spoke some English to sort it all out and told us they would sort it but yes it is slow but that is life in Spain is about getting away from the fast lane.

I love San Juan and it is the quietness and peacefulness we love. We cannot wait until we can get there for longer or permanently. I have looked at many places but I like the quaintness, I hope the big development in Pulpi down the road from San Juan does not have a huge commercialisation effect.

Yes winters are cold but not as cold as in UK (we live in the South East), and I sit here writing this, I wish I was there right now :(

I will be back in February..yippppeeeee :)

Saludos Sam

Hi Sam, been there this morning, beautiful sunny day, 21c in the shade, hot sitting out in the Chiringitto overlooking the beach. We do not live in LT but close by, and we have several friends living in LT.

Met them there at the market today.

We trust you will be over soon. Best regards Al
