FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE THINKING OF MOVING TO ALMERIA THINK CAREFULLY .WE SPENT 2 MONTHS IN SAN JAN DE LOS TERREROS IN JAN/FEB AND FOR US HAVING TO FLUSH OUR TIOLETS WITH THE WATER FROM THE SWIMMING POOL BECAUSE THEY CUT OFF THE WATER TO THE VILLA SEVERAL TIMES WITHOUT NOTICE FOR US WAS DISGUSTI...

...NG.ALSO THINK OF THE HEALTH SYSTEM ,NO OLD PEOPLES HOMES IF YOU ARE SERIOUSLY ILL IN OLD AGE YOU WOULD UNLESS YOU HAVE FAMILY TO LOOK AFTER YOU ,WOULD HAVE TO MOVE BACK TO THE UK,THE NEAREST DOCTORS TO US WAS IN VERA NOT GOOD IN AN EMERGENCY.

IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT A NEW LIFE THERE ,RENT  DO NOT BUY ,BECAUSE SELLING WILL BE A PROBLEM .NEVER MIND ABOUT SUN SEA AND SELLING HOUSES ON TV ,ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD.

THE NIGHTS IN WINTER ARE FREEZING AND AIR CON HEATING IS VERY EXPENSIVE,ALL THE RIVERS ARE DRY ,AND THE MOUNTAINS BELIEVE ME WILL GET ON YOUR NERVES,PLEASE BE CAREFUL DO RESEARCH

I totally disagree with your view of SJT. I lived there for more than 10 years. It combines a wonderful climate with good restaurants, great walks, a greatly improved infrastructure and a thriving social life. It`s not Marbella and remains essentially Spanish.  When Corvera Airport opens in January road and air access will be excellent.

You describe a very different place...everyone to their own.

I wouldn’t normally weigh in on a discussion such as this; everyone has their opinion and is entitled to it.

But I find myself in agreement with Sportscar - attitude is everything.  We had a friend visit from overseas recently .... the things I found charming, quaint, uniquely Spanish .... he couldn’t handle.  The lack of lane discipline or use of indicators on roundabouts, cars just stoppin...

...g in the middle of the road and the driver nipping into the shops, or just stopping to chat to a friend .... and so on and so forth.  He also commented on “the language barrier”

What language barrier? It’s Spain.  The language is Spanish, ergo we learn the language!! But I digress.  Spain is not for everyone, it is mind-numbingly bureaucratic, and don’t expect things to happen in a hurry ....

But you’ll find “bad” in every country and let’s be honest, UK has its challenges, which is why a good proportion of us are here!! But the good in Spain far far outweighs the bad, with a much less stressful way of life, fabulous weather and very mild winters - well certainly here in Vera (New Years day saw me sitting on the deck in shorts and shirtless ... can’t quite remember the last time I was able to do THAT in UK on NYD!!)

Plus to my mind (AND THIS IS MY OPINION!!!!) the people maketh the country, and I love the Spanish.  I love their directness, laissez faire attitude, their sense of fun and joy and the endless fiestas..... for all those that say “BUT BUT BUT THE SPANISH ARE .....” this is what I have found - my interactions have all been overwhelmingly positive, from shops through Ayuntamiento, Correos, Extranjeros and the the customers at the bar I work.

Look, this is rambling a bit (ok, a lot!!) but what I’m trying to say is that it is easy to see the negative, to take everything that happens as “bad” and be disheartened, but to provide balance, if you come here with an open mind, accept Spain as it IS, not as you would want it to be, accept the people as they are and try to integrate, you really will have a fabulous time.

There WILL be rough times - but like I said, the good here far far far outweighs the bad.  Spain is our home; we don’t maintain a house anywhere else in the world nor do we intend to.  This is where we want to be, permanently.

To Raygil - I am truly sorry that your experience was not a positive one - perhaps in another area, who knows?

To others considering Spain - do not be put off.  Atiitude is everything, it’s a beautiful place with beautiful people and if you allow it, you really will enjoy life here

Saludos, Darío

We live in France ,where we can see a doctor the same day book your own dates for operations needed ,we have a myriad of old peoples homes, we never have our water cut off or electricity, all of our  rivers have full  as our all our reservoirs .

We have the sunshine hours of the cote de zur .We spent two months in Spain could not fault the Spanish people but some of the English left a lot to be desired. Some replies l have had already are from people who have gone back to blighty !!! I wonder why??

Dario, I,m with you on this. Thanks for your eloquent description of the Spanish experience...it mirrors my own.  I have owned a place in France and respect the efficiency and cleanliness of their towns but I much prefer the friendliness of the Spanish people.  Incidentally we moved from SJT to the Costa Tropical to be near grandkids in Nerja not because of any environmental issue.    Dick

SURVIVAL BEING THE OPERATIVE WORD DOWN THERE ,

Right, then it is even best never to come or tyo move immidiatly.

When you move to a foreign country should abstain yourself from what you got before. Meaning a change in life, habitutes, attitudes, social life.

About a social life if you enclose yourself in enclaves like Belgians, English do you will never integrate. Not speaking of the language.

It is not them that have to change. It is you!

Attitude is everything and I am moving here in September by myself but I am happy to blend in and go with the flow, it can't be colder than the uk in winter and you have to be accommodating to the country you choose to live in. I will make the best of it and get stuck in and try and learn the language and embrace the Spanish way because that is  what I love so much about Spain. I might even meet a lovely Spanish man !!

Lynn, you’ll have a fabulous time :-)

And no, it most certainly isn’t colder than UK in winter :-D

Where are you intending moving to Lynn?
