Hi

I understand that barking dog are the norm here in Spain and nothing can be done about stray dogs that gather and bark in the night, however I have a neighbour who has a dog and when she goes out the dog barks until she returns, the dog is in the house not in the garden, it’s annoying but I’ve been told that unless the barking is after 11 pm at night there’s not a lot I can do about it. She goes to the shops, doctors and sometimes goes out a couple of nights a week, am I am being realistic with my expectations or am I within my rights to complain.

I live in an urbanisation, I’m non resident my neighbour is ex pat resident, there’s a mixture of nationalities Spanish, Dutch, English. I know someone on my urbanisation who complained about the stray dogs to the town hall and was told this is Spain if you don’t like it move, my question is can I make my neighbour deal with the barking dog whilst she’s out shopping, I know she doesn’t stay out that long but it’s still a nuisance. There are other people on my urbanisation with dogs (Spanish and English)

It's a difficult situation, are you worried that if you approach your neighbor you'll annoy her?

I had a dog, a rescue, that had a bunch of lets say phycological social problems, lead reactive to other dogs, frightened of men and children there was a few more but one of them we only found out about when we set up a motion detector app on a phone camera for a completely different reason other than spying on the dog.

Anyway, it turned out that when we left our house the dog would bark from the time we left the driveway until the time we returned, be it 15 minutes or 5 hours. We found out that this behavior was caused by separation anxiety. Perhaps your neighbor is unaware of the dog barking constantly while they are away. It an be over come but only with a great deal of time and patience.

The hard part, for you, is how to broach the subject with them.  If you're not too worried about  whether or not you'll piss them off, you could just approach them directly.

Or you could slip a note under their door or tape it to their door and mention the dog barks while they are away and mention the separation anxiety.

It also manifests when dogs chew or destroy stuff i.e. shoes cushions furniture etc..  Or fouling the floors.

Diplomacy here is the key, I guess

Yes the lady told me the dog suffers separation anxiety, I suppose it’s a difficult one isn’t it. Thank you for your very kind words both ways, very understanding.

suggest to her that she leaves a radion or tele on when she goes out, sometimes it helps to settle the dog when it hears human voices

Thanks for your suggestions,

Good Idea, but now you may have to tolerate a radio or TV blaring, bit of a no win.

Or work with them on the separation anxiety ?

Would you consider minding the dog while she's gone? Your home anyway.

We have had a similar problem with several owners and even a dog who used to be quiet joined in after a few months.

You have to tell the owner(s) but you must have a president too - see if the Pres will back you up as well. Most of the time the owner doesn't know, so, it is an essential first step and puts you in the tight place morally. Some owners just go into denial mode but stay polite and keep telling them.

Repeat as and when necessary.

Also get other people involved if there is no improvement  and then ask the police as a group +/- a President. In my experience the police may take action if there are enough complaints but not as an individual complainer?

We had such a problem that I took some action of my own. Once a dog chorus starts I respond with a dog whistle. It is higher pitched than our hearing but is irritating to dogs. If it is just one dog and it barks for 5 seconds respond with the same duration immediately it starts barking. Repeat each time.

I should note that the app on my phone called "Dog Whistle" is what I am using, not a physical whistle. Its made by CreativeOne, has a green background with a white dog and white sound arcs on it.

Out of a pack of seven dogs it has taken about 15 months to shorten their time barking until the whistle starts. At worst times I leave it on continuous and at least it makes the dog move away from next to my wall.

In America they sell dog speakers that detect barking and respond in a similar manner - automatically. :)

Good luck with the education program!
