Hi,

We were in Aguilas Plaza de España on Saturday and were fortunate to witness a very beautiful and opulent Spanish wedding. After the bride arrived, most of the guests followed her into the church- with the exception of numerous men. All the guys were well dressed, drinking beer and obviously celebrating. All age groups, why didn’t they attend the ceremony? Were their reasons religious? Not judging, just thought it odd. Does anybody know?

Thanks for reading this. Hope I get a reply!

I cannot reply with certainty, but as a practising Roman Catholic I can say that I am always in a huge minority on attending Sunday Mass or Mass on any occasion. The vast majority of the congregation is female. It doesn't surprise me that most of the men attending the wedding adjourned to some watering hole instead of attending the wedding Mass. There may be various reasons for this and perhaps it's not the place for me to supply my opinions. Having said that, the Roman Catholic Church hasn't covered itself in glory over the past years regarding many issues including child abuse, recognition of homosexuality and same sex marriage.

Consequently, many Roman Catholics have dropped their organised religion and many even opt for civil marriages rather than church weddings. I've probably said too much here but hope I have answered your question.

Matt.
