Hi all we are both in our late 50’s & planning early retirement, our house is up for sale as we speak ( the majority of funds from the sale will remain in the pot until we retire) we have bought a fabulous little apartment in SJDLT & can’t wait to ‘move in’. We aim to be there ASAP or realistically just into the new year. We have visited SJDLT on many occasions just for short weekend breaks (governed by work holidays) & never feel ready to go back to the rat race of the uk. We enjoy the relaxed chilled way of life SJDLT offers, the Spanish people & obviously the climate & can see ourselves living there & spending valuable time together   doing things we enjoy eg cycling, walking,    visiting new places.  Many friends have said ‘go for it life’s too short’ whilst the odd one or 2 have said ‘you must be mad’ each to their own eh? Are there any ex pats out there who can give us their truthful/ honest views on moving the whole shabang to SJDLT? We both feel sure it’s for us but.   interested to hear other people’s views 🤔🤔

Hi we moved to Almeria last October. Like you early 50's, sold our house in the UK.  We moved inland but stayed many times in  SJDLT.  We have not looked back and love it here.  You only live once so take the chance and enjoy life to the full x

Thank you that’s exactly what we were thinking 😉your on our wave length 👍 I guess          retirement is a massive change & slightly scarey wherever you are when you’ve worked constantly for 40 years to suddenly having time to do things at your own leisure, nice to have someone else’s input thankyou 👍

Hi Mrs B , We too are thinking of early retirement like yourselves, we are both mid 50’s and are looking to be moving out next year, we are at the moment preparing for the move we are coming out again later this year to look at more properties and getting our house ready to sell. We too have had some negative vibes from family/ friends about our plans. Like yourselves we have each worked for 40yrs and now feel we have earned our retirement in the sun, staying in the U.K. we feel is not for us, you feel so much happier when the sun shines and motivated to pursue your dreams. The bottom line is to do what you think is right for you, and everyone’s opinion is different, just cos they wouldn’t consider it for themselves doesn’t mean it’s not for you. We love Spain and we feel we will have a longer stress free healthier retirement there.  But we too have scary moments and it can be a bit daunting, but if wedon’t do it , we will always be wondering, what if !!! Whilst we are shut up in the mist of winter watching daytime telly😝. Everyone we have met in Spain have said ‘Just DO IT ‘  👍

We will look forward to reading of other expats experiences and any advice x

Wishing you all the best ,

Dave & Carol😎

When we sold up and moved to Spain, our Doctor of 45 years said " southeast coast of Spain? You have just added 5 years to your life ".

Now seven years later we could not tolerate English weather, have not been back to the UK and probably never will.

We cycle along the playa early every morning, the sea view is different every day. Normally blue skies, we sit overlooking the Med having our morning coffee and tostada.

We have better health, more vitality at 70 than we did in our later working days in the Uk.

My Wife was diagnosed in her 50 's as severe asthmatic, one month after moving here, she never needed an inhaler again. Previously she always had to carry one with her.

My long time friend in the UK in the meantime looks forward to his breakfast every Thursday on his " Tesco's island" usually in the rain.

We fortunately now, live in a different world. Our world our home is Spain.

Hi thankyou for your message it’s great to hear other people’s views & experiences & the effect the move to Spain has had on people’s lives. You both sound amazing & making the most of the lovely lifestyle you lead. Both my husband & I love to ride our bikes too maybe our paths will cross one day & if they do it’s coffee & tostada for four with a view of the Med ☺️Thankyou again

Hi, I agree with everything that people have said it is great here, but.....................when things go wrong (hopefully they wont) but if they do you need to be prepared, it is daunting having a health problem or a money worry in a country where you don't fully understand the system and especially if you don't speak the language. So I would say get a back up plan in place, i.e. English speaking doctor, tax advisor, make sure you know your rights before you take the plunge. Good Luck kind regard  Jenni

Hiya  we purchased a property in SJDLT  last year and love it hopefully we will retire in a couple of years  but for now it's a holiday home.  There's plenty to do and people are friendly and helpful. Enjoy your retirement  life is too short to have regrets.
