This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Yes ... not sure where you got that 300.000 figure from - there’s around 384.000 expats in Spain, and as Chrisso says only around a quarter of that number are pensioners, so your argument falls flat there.

On top of that, the people that DO come in as from 1/1/21 will be, as Andy demonstrates, financially better off than a lot of pensioners, and for the first 5 years they’ll need to prove that wealth at three intervals, so I foresee, again, as Andy points out, contributions to Spain’s coffers.

But again, as Chris has mentioned, the UK is not the only country that has pensioners living here.  Where I live, the people are all French or Spanish - only one or two Brits here.

Spain is going to be fine.  There will be no “special arrangement” for the British. It’s simply not needed.

But I say again to those who ARE coming; please be aware this is NOT England with sunshine.  It IS a different country and it may take a little time to adjust to the very different culture and customs - but it is very worthwhile.

Seems I’ve started a debate here!

All I can say is, I have looked and looked on the internet to try find any indication of what the new conditions will be, post brexit .

There is nothing at all to indicate what they will be. I have spoken with my solicitor and someone who deals in facilitating residency . They too do not know what the Spanish government will impose. They did say they believe there will no Spanish language test , but I appreciate they do not know for definite.

All we can hope is there isn’t a test . As the best will in the world and I know this sounds negative, both my wife and I would struggle to speak flint Spanish in a year . We have been for lessons and I found it very hard . I have also purchased a CD and if it on in the car (usb) regular , playing over and over . So we are trying and we do want to embrace the Spanish culture .
we have had a house in Spain, since May 2017 and we also know that Spain is very laid back and do things different from the Uk . This to me is the attraction . The UK is a rat race . Full of, well not full of, but loads of idiots that are rude , racist and think UK still “rules the world”

We don’t want to be part of that ! Hence, why we came to SJDT where there is a nice mix of people . No British bars ( not one ) .

Here’s hoping we can still move and contribute to the economy!

I’m certain you’ll be fine; as it stands right now, requirements for British Nationals post transition period are exactly the same as for any other Third Country National wishing to move here - there are a couple of good blogs written by Americans who made the move to Spain and outlined what they had to go through - find one of those, and it will give you the clearest idea of what to expect.

Hi. We have a house in spain already . I’m retiring at 55 and have no intention at all of working . We are fully self sufficient financially with no mortgage and quite a lot above average savings . I intend to buy a new car, have local builders in to construct a pool and live in spain until I d...

...ie . Therefore contributing a lot to the Spanish economy. At 55 Spanish won’t be the easiest thing  to learn as the old coggs aren’t as well oiled at when I was 21. I have been told by other people , professionals, who work in Spain, that they don’t feel it will be a requirement to speak Spanish to get residency in 2021 . Fingers crossed . I want to learn Spanish , but at my own pace .

If you want to get to grips with Spanish and can afford it, I do recommend you consider doing a one to one course at your nearest Berlitz Language School.  I suppose these still exist all over the UK, although it might all be online now as I left the UK in the 80's. If you are paying it is often enoughmotivation in itself to get stuck in, whereas free lessons are not tailored to individual needs and many lose heart if they get left behind and give up.  Also I am told that you get a lot of time wasters at large or free classes who join up to get to know other expats rather than learn the language.

If you use a computer regularly, 'Duolingo' is great, it IS free, but once you have started it becomes quite addictive  to put in a quick ten minutes practice between other things, and you learn words almost without noticing. I find that trying to memorise a list of words no longer works for me however hard I try, but now have quite a reasonable basic vocabulary just with their repeated phrases and even a vague inkling of some verb usage...  It is not enough to learn real spoken Spanish with, but it certainly helps.

From our experience there are just as many people comeing back to UK as their are moving to Spain. No one really knows how this will shake down when it all settles down there maybe meny rule changes but whether thay are in forced remains to be seen.

Sorry - nothing of what? The Withdrawal Agreement? We left the EU on 31 Jan and after the Transition period ends on 31 December UK nationals will be subject to the same terms and conditions as other third country [non-EU] nationals that arrive in Spain to settle here.
