Hi there .

Does anyone know how customs value your ‘second hand’ goods . Things like , personal clothing, furniture, old TVs etc etc . How can they value them? They are not worth the same second had as we all know when we come to try sell things . ?

Thank you

Andy

Hi Andy,

Moving out to Spain next week and just finished my inventory. The way that I calculated the value of my goods was to estimate what i would sell them for, were I to put them on ebay.

This is not the insurance value which is much higher as you would be replacing new for old.

Ok . Will this be accepted . My Mrs has tried to sell things in the last and we have Alamodome things from house moves . You bet virtually nothing . Just wondered how customs could value say a second had jumper . Probably worthless and would send to the charity shop . Same as dining room furniture , beds, old TVs ( as in not brand new) the list goes on . In reality, no one is just going to leave every single item in the UK and buy everything again , are they ??? it’s madness ! Please let us know how you go on and the process.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy, will do...

So far, Spanish Import/export fee £288 incl vat, UK customs fee £120 incl vat, admin fee £60 incl vat.

A customs guarantee bond of 30% of your total estimated value of goods, so if you value all your goods at £6000, you will have to deposit £1800 into the removal company account but this is refundable within 14 days of your goods being cleared through customs.

Any goods purchased in the UK during the previous 6 months before departure are subject to a 21% Spanish IVA charge of the cost of the goods.

I've heard stories of people being charged from €150 - €650 'additional' charge at Spanish customs for no clear reason. It seems to be very random.

Hope this helps

Mike

They dont, but if you try to hide it and customs find it in your goods, you run the risk of having the whole lot confiscated and auctioned off.  Spanish customs can do that without telling you and they keep the proceeds...

I have about £1000 worth of new stuff which i have kept in their original boxes with IVA stickers on them, hopefully the £210 cost to me will satisfy them.

As regards other things you put a value on yourself . For example clothing . Do you do the whole lot as an estimate ?

I valued each box individually on the inventory, e.g Box 1 DVD's £50, Box 2 Books £75   etc...

My containers with tools in are labelled Tools and Miscellaneous £200

Then..

IVA

Bosch Pillar Bench drill... cost £300 converted to euros and worked out 21% of that

I did a spreadsheet to total it all up

👍

Thanks. OMG . Literally , you have to price. Everything then. Then add 21 of its value and pay again for it all. Brexit , fantastic ! God knows how you value a pair of used shoes , underpants etc etc . No wonder people are no longer moving abroad ! Enough to put you off with all the hidden costs .

Sorry if this sounds stupid. But if for instance people moved to Turkey, Greece or Cyprus or anywhere else, would the procedure and costs be the same apart from the 21% tax?
