Am progressing with looking at retiring to Costa Almeria. Have spoken to my financial advisor in the UK to get a projection of whether my dream is realistic financially.  The outcome is that I need to find what I would pay tax on and how much it would be.

Can anyone recommend a tax advisor in the area or have any input / info on this?

Thanks in advance, Janet

quite easy to work out yourself.  Tax will be due on your worldwide income in Spain no matter where it comes from.  The only issue is the rate of tax you would pay according to your age and the level of income and the area of Spain you settle in.  Andalucia has a good tax record I believe.  The tax allowances for pensioners is not as high as the UK and the State Pension is included in your income the only ones not taxed are Civil service or armed forces which are taxed in the UK.  However, if they are not taxable because they fall under the rates then they will be included by Spain as your income and taxed here.

Yes but without knowing the circumstances it’s dangerous to speculate. We don’t know what is being referred to. Inheritance tax, Sipps, personal pensions, Uk Government pension, income from collective investments, bonds etc rental income etc. All taxed differently.

The other point I think needs to be borne in mind is the short (or not so short)term cost of changing tax residence.  As I understand it, you will need to pay at least your first instalment of Spanish tax on your worldwide income, while you are still paying tax on the same income in the U.K.  Only then can you get a certificate of tax residence from the Spanish government enabling you to stop paying tax in the U.K. and enabling you claim back double tax.  I gather that in some cases, it can take a considerable amount of time to get all the bureaucratic issues sorted and understand that there has recently been some considerable delay in getting the money back from tHMRC!  This could come as a nasty shock if your tax bill is reasonably substantial and you don’t have money put aside to tide you over.  While it may all work smoothly in many case, I have recently heard from several people about delays lasting years in getting this sorted out.

This sounds awfully complex and beyond me. I don't have a massive amount of financial assets - no property just savings, my private pension (including my tax free allowance, which I would want to preserve) then my state pension and some pension I am owed from my time working in Germany. I certainly think that in the first instance I would us a recommended tax advisor, just to make sure I've got it right and don't get bitten in the proverbial!

Thank you so much for your advice.

Thanks for pointing this out. Tax can be a minefield wherever you are and no matter what your circumstances. I'm going down the advisor route on this occasion, just want to know what tax would be due on and how much it would be. Might try and squeak it in before Christmas. Thanks for your advice.

Stop stressing.

My mother in law was also stressed, but she pays tax in Denmark, and her last tax bill in Spain was almost nothing.

Contact Miguel 950 32 13 91. He's a lawyer that speaks perfect English. Just let him take care of everything .
