Hi there,

We will be shipping the contents of our apartment from outside an EU country. The removals company claim we must pay tax on all our stuff unless we are residentsbecause we are not currently living in the EU although we are British. However research suggests they are wrong and as long as we obtain the Padron certificate we can bring in our used household items free of taxes. Has anyone else brought in their personal possessioms to Roquetas / Spain and encountered this. Did you pay tax ? What documents were requested when your items arrived into Spain to get through customs without tax. The tax if payable will be huge. Thanks in advance for anyone who has been in this situation.

Thank you so much for replying to me it is appreciated. However my situation is different because I am shipping to Spain but not from an EU country and not from the UK. I am shipping to Roquetas from Dubai and because this is outside the EU the shippers say I must pay 40% tax. I believe the shippers are incorrect but I wonder if anyone out there has also shipped to Spain from outside the EU. Thsnks again everyone.

Hi,

Would it be worth contacting Citizens Advice Spain on www.citizensadvice.org.es.  ?????

They are on Google Search and they have a Contact Us.

Worked in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, KSA & Libya but never had problems with shipping. All left to the various Companies.

Marsalama or something similar.

Hi there. Thank you will contact them. Did you ship your household items into Spain from any of those countries. I understand this requirement re tax was introduced or properly enforced post 2015.  We are concerned as our tax bill to bring in our years old furniture / clothes / kichen stuff is looking around €20,000. Crazy and scary.

No, I was a Private Sector from 1975-86'& then joined HMForces. After that it was down to them.

Sounds awful.

Might it not be a suggestion to sell as much as possible locally???? We shipped 1 ton to Libya.on.initial.contract although a fully furnished villa was provided. When we left 2 yrs later we sold for twice the original price. Mind you that was 1977 & Libya!!!!!

Best Wishes again,

Bob and Sandra

Hi

I had a similar issue which was resolved in two ways. We were living in Singapore and needed to ship about half our household back to Spain about four years ago. At that time I had a none resident NIE but owned a property in Barcelona. Sing shipping agent identified this issue and shipped into UK (I have UK nationality) with land transfer to Spain. This worked fine and the additional shipping cost was way less than paying Spanish taxes and duties. Brexit and your timing may preclude this as an option.

The balance of our stuff went to China where we lived until middle of last year. Again on arranging shipping back the clearing agent in Spain advised of the tax issue. We were unable to use the ship via UK route for other reasons. I had to supply my China employment contract, tax and payroll documentation and amend my NIE from none resident to resident, with all this documentation the import was free of all taxes and duties.

Hope this helps.

Ian

Hi Ian, yes exactly our situation. We too can not bring in our shipping via the UK. We have been told the law on doing this changed about 3 years ago. Basically you are saying that if we become residents along with our proof of working and living in Dubai we can do this. Very interesting. Thank you so much for your time. Can I ask at what point you applied for residency. Was it a few months in advance of leaving China or did you do it in the time you were waiting for your stuff to arrive from China. Thank you again.
