Brexit will affect everyone to a greater or lesser extent. I'm not an expat in that I only visit our property about once every 6 weeks, but primarily the concern of expats is around access to healthcare in Spain  and whether pensions can continue to be paid to expatriates after Brexit. The press are full of scare stories about expats being forced to return to the UK for medical treatment because the cost of private healthcare in EU countries post-Brexit will be prohibitive. I don't know but then at the moment no-one knows what the outcome will be, but in the timeframe that you are looking at everything should have been resolved. So you don't need to make any decisions just yet: watch and wait. Personally I am hopeful that there won't be too many changes as the expatriate British community brings vast financial benefits to Spain as well as to other EU countries, so I can't see the EU "negotiating" changes which would lead to an massive outflow of Brits from across the continent. That would be shooting themselves in the foot. However it works both ways and I hope Theresa May will give reciprocal rights to EU citizens who were in the UK legally at some set time. To me that's obviously in everyone's interest.

Sorry, I can't give any opinion on work prospects but there's still 16%+ unemployment in Spain so it's not going to be easy, particularly if you don't speak Spanish. It seems for a lot of people with your skills that they do some work, get a reputation, do some more and the reputation builds leading to a nice business. A lot of it will be on personal contact and recommendations..

Hi Jaz

I have just bought an apartment near the hotel sabinal.

When I was in the process of buying, my lawyer and I talked about brexit.  He said Spain has always had a good relationship with the U.K. and couldn't see any reason why it should cause any real problems when we leave the EU.

The President of our community is a local man with a huge amount of knowledge about the area. He would be a good man to talk to. I am going out to my apartment later this month and will ask him but good plumbers are like gold dust here in the uk! I don't see why Spain should be any different!!  The electrics in Spain are wierd and wonderful. When I had my new kitchen fitted, I couldn't believe how dangerous the old wiring was!

My apartment is two bedrooms with a sea view and all mod cons. I won't use it in August so may be able to help with accommodation. I haven't bought it to rent out but I don't mind for a few weeks when I'm not using it.

I will let you know what I find out later this month

Regards

Maureen

Hi Maureen,

My name is Cindee and my husband and I are seriously considering moving to Spain before the UK winter sets in. We are looking for somewhere that is not totally touristy but still has a substantial number of expats living there. My husband is a sports massage and injury therapist and I am a Pilates teacher and we will be looking to work there. We also want somewhere that has a feel of local Spanish culture and history. It looks like Roquetas de Mar might suit our needs. From the little I have told you, do you think we are looking in the right place? We don't have much experience of Spain although I do speak some Spanish. We were considering coming out to stay in August for 10 days or two weeks to get a feel for the area and start looking at rentals before we buy. Also, if you are considering renting your flat for a short period in August we might be interested. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Cindee

Hi all

I am moving to Almeria at Easter and will be working in Roquetas de Mar. I have never been before so do not know the area. I’m not sure I want to live in RDM as right near work. Which areas surrounding are good to live in? I would like a short walking journey to work. I’m in my 40s so not interested in partying. Somewhere with some decent bars and restaurants and a decent bus service?

Thank you

Aquadulce is a small place with a lot of bars and restaurants on a good bus route. It could well suit your needs. It is also close to the city of Almeria.
