Hi

We have both. Gas.ones at the cottage & an electric.one at apartment.

Don't see s.lot of.difference really although electricity is, on balance more expensive out here. But then heavy cylinders to change & carry. Our plumber refused to give us a license of suitability at the cottage as our 2 gas water heaters were inside & not outside. Others have reported being certificated inside when fitted by Repsol or Cepsa. It's Spain. Others have reported.you need an annual check with gas for your Home Insurance but Allianz denied that.

Lastly be aware of the fake gas inspectors that may turn up at your door claiming they have a legal right to inspect your gas installation. They are con men even though they mimic Repsol clothing & forms. They have no right of entry. Ring the Police.

Saludos,

Bob and Sandra

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the heads-up re the fake inspectors.

In relation to the OP's question -

As I understand it the reg's changed recently and gas heaters require a proper flue like in the UK. Previously the open vent (to air) system was ok but not anymore.

As for choice, because of this you might not have one and have to go electric - you'd need to work out (or get a Pro) where and what you can have really - if it's electric then I'd advise on getting a decent make and not the cheapest, for reasons of reliabilty and overall cost.

Hope this helps

Hi Westy57, Welcome to Roquetas. Just your own preference.

Probably gas cheaper, but you have to open an account with Butano and obviously order new bottles when necessary.

Electric depends on the heater, with a thermostat or without.

Ok if your memory is good for turning things off when hot enough for your needs. Needless to say, I have my senior moments.

To purchase you have Leroy at the Gran Plaza. There is a smaller electric shop opposite the Gran Plaza, which my friend and I have found things cheaper in.

To get to it, turn down the road at the roundabout which heads down towards the beach and turn-through the first gap and then first left, by the Laro cafe. Just around the corner, you will see the shop on the right.

Good luck

Hi,

Now I freely admit I have no knowledge at all in this area but both our gas water heaters have chimneys that go out through the external walls and have little sombreros on top. No, Domingo stated that although our systems were safe it was now necessary with newb installations that the water heaters themselves and their bottles were outside. I know they do make water heaters that sit externally with a protective cabinet, hood, etc.

Electric heater not viable at cottage as on Solar.

Best Wishes,

Bob and Sandra

I believe in keeping things simple. Go electric. Unless you have lots of baths, it shouldn't bankrupt you.

No flues, no inspections, no cylinders to lug, and no carbon monoxide poisoning.

Cheers,

Brian.
