Hi all. Now that we're actually here, thought perhaps we should make ourselves known :-) We have just moved to Roquetas from the UK, having holidayed here many times and currently renting an apartment in the urbanization. I speak a little Spanish, but find it quite hard understanding the rapid-fire Andalusian version that is being fired at me - it'll get easier, I know. Managing to cotton on to enough so far to manage ok. My husband isn't so hot on the language, but can make himself understood with the basics mostly.

We have 2 current priorities - getting online and applying for residencia! However, we are very confused about the actual process for residency as everyone seems to suggest doing things in a different order. We have health care via s1 forms and already have a spanish bank account. Also have a rental contract obviously. So what comes first? Do we need to get an NIE no first, or does that come with residencia? Do we have to get ourselves on the padron to become resident, or do we need the residencia to get on the padron? Everywhere I look I get different answers! If anyone, who has been through the whole process recently, can point us in the right direction we'd be very grateful.

The internet thingy is almost as confusing. Because of the situation of our apartment (a couple of taller blocks nearby cause problems with various signals) it looks as though we will have to go with fibre-optic - which would be my preference anyway. Is it possible to have an internet only connection or do they all come with line-rental even though we don't need a land-line? Movistar has been suggested to us, but I've also had a look at MasMovil. Again, if anyone can point us in the right direction......we'll be using an internet based TV service, so the speed needs to be reasonably good.

So sorry for the long rambling post - we knew this wouldn't be straightforward from doing quite a bit of research before we came out here, but we're in danger of tying ourselves in knots trying to figure it all out.

Many thanks in advance, Jane

Thanks! I was reasonably sure that was the case, but on reading some other stuff, became unsure.

Our solicitor took us to almeria which I’m pretty sure is very common unless of course your feeling brave Lol

Our allocated personnel didn’t crack a smile not even a hola to our solicitor so what chance did we have .

Any document that was requested if not given immediately was met with a very strange silence bit like the tax office I suppose Lol

Hi, Just going thru the process. You don't say if you are pensioners? If you are this is what you do. If you aren't then the process is different.

1. get an NIE

2. Go to your local town hall with your NIE and get a Padron .

3. Ring DWP in UK and request an S1 and also a proof of income certificate.

4. The proof of income certificate has to be translated, here in Spain.

Then armed with all that lot, plus your passports, photo copies of all the above, plus passport pictures, you go off to Almeria for your residency.

In Spain you really cant do anything without an NIE, buy a car, buy a house, even buy a phone all need your NIE, so always carry a copy with you.

There is a organisation called CATS service 950 634 388  or 627 635 514 who will help you thru all of this.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for all the info - we are indeed pensioners and already in possession of our S1 forms - one of the few things we could do before actually arriving here 🙂

Thanks again, much appre

Hi welcome to Spain.

This is a good forum full of well intended participants.

However the ukgov have a site which answers all your questions about living in Spain.

The necessary paperwork can be daunting. If you go yourself any single mistake on any application will normally get you sent away.

Mistakes cannot be rectified there and then.

If you look for a legal Gestoria they will know exactly what you need. Far better to pay them to get your ' legals done'.

I am sure residents in your town will recommend one.

Beware of the " bar room lawyer ".

Always seek professional advice

Enjoy your new life.

We holiday in Mar y Sal apartments back there again just before xmas. We love Roquetas.

If and when we sell our villa we will rent there too.

Best regards Al

Thank you. I’ve been looking this afternoon for info on local gestoria-the more I see of what’s required, the more I realise it’s unlikely we’ll get it right first time on our own 😕

Hi,

Welcome to Roquetas de Mar:

The first thing to get is indeed your N:I:E: nr, then you go to the town hall dept. padronamiento with your pasport, your NIE and a utility bill in your name. You apply for your residency and wait.  Your fingerprints will be taken and you will be given your residence card.

You can also go to an asessoria and they will take care of this.  In Roquetas you have Victoria Services in the calle Sierra nevada.  her name is Astrid and she  speaks English.

Hope this was helpful to you.

Ria

Thank you Ria, that is incredibly helpful. I’d identified a couple of possibles, but that is much closer to us. Thanks again
