Hello all, I have been following the site for some time now and would like to ask for some       advice from the group.

We are two active retirees from rural Norfolk and have had many holidays on the costa's over the last few years, however this is our first visit to the Almeria region.

I am now at that stage in life where I am ticking off items from my bucket list and as a big Clint Eastwood fan thought I would use the opportunity to visit the desert area where they shot a lot of his early films.

Beyond that I have no plans. We are in the area for a couple of weeks, mid May, does anyone have any suggestions as to how we could fill our time usefully. Bars? Restaurants? Attractions?   Places of local interest? I have been a keen photographer for nearly 60 years so opportunities for that magic shot that we are all looking for would be great.

Many thanks in anticipation

Peter

If you have a car and like Clint Eastwood then go to the village of Los Albaricoques where the Good, bad and ugly was filmed. Check out film sites and the Hostel restaurants Alba with lots of stuff and films.  The museum of Cinema in Almeria is also interesting. Another film location is Estacion La Calahorra and Calahorra Castle.  The Raiders of the Lost Around was filmed in the area and the beach in the Call de Gato is a photographer's dream.  The scene where Sean Connery scares the seagulls so the plane crashes was filmed there.

Thank you Alicia, I now have the beginning of a list. I did not plan to rent a car but will research the information you have given me as it may now be worth while.

Hi PCB

Get the bus or train (direction Granada) as far as Guadix and have a look at the cave houses. Literally if you want to extend your house you get a jack hammer and carve out a new room.

It's a bit of a distance from the bus and rail station to the cave houses so either you take a long walk or perhaps talk to the people at the tourist office about taking a tour or getting a taxi.

A warning: these are real homes so you must respect the privacy of the people living there!

Thank you, sounds interesting, I have built a few houses but nothing quite that unique.

Hi Peter, I am a spaniard with ancestors from Lubrin, a small village, kind of a pearl lost in the middle of desserted mountains... I would highly recommend to explore " Cabo de Gata" is a preserved área, ready for your camera. In my long time ago tour in the area, also visited a beautiful town named  "Luicainena". Lubrin is a genuine village, for a nice stop and go visit on market's day.

I am also a fan of Clint!

In my personal opinión Almería is less tourist trap than other southern provinces... Enjoy your stay!

Angel

Thank you Angel, I did have Cabo de Gata in mind, you have now made it a definate plan.

I will more than likely be without transport so limited as to where I can get to, although your village sounds like just the place I would appreciate.

My list is getting longer thanks to yours and others kind replies.

I feel sure that this will not be my last trip to the Almeria region.

Hi,

We recently spent 1 year in the area; I took literally hundreds of excellent pictures, best when there is a dark moody sky as well, but not many of them..!! You will not get to see any of the places that have been mentioned... without a car or flexible transport unfortunately, although Mojacar/Garrucha sea fronts are good for photography.

Thanks Stuart, I am still considering my options as far as transport. Apart from site seeing I will not need any as I am staying at the Best Roquetas in Roquet de Mar with transfers to and from the Airport provided, it appears that most other places are within walking distance as far as I can see.

However I will use Pepe Tours for a couple of trips if I rule out hiring transport.
