Ok.. my parents have a place in RDM, and each time have to hire a car, which is very expensive.

I am going out end of Aug, and looking at the car hire, and see and hear so many things...

My dad religiously gets his car hire from Gold Car from the airport and takes out their insurance, as they dont hold any money off your card, and if there is anything (even a scratch) you will not be charged for it.. he has been burnt before.

Obv this all comes at a cost.

IS there any other better/cheaper way?

For example, i have looked at Do You Spain, and the prices are cheaper, and they have some insurance, which looks like it covers all of this etc, says:

"Yes, i want full cover with 0% risk"

However, it is still not clear - will i need to provide a holding deposit off my credit card, or pay an excess if something is wrong?

Any help advice, or reccomendations, would be really appreciated.

Thanks

I use a company in the uk for my excess insurance £48 a year.   I got a credit card just for the deposits which have never actually been charged.  I book through the rental cars.com app and its been great.

Can you tell me which company you got your excess insurance from for £48 per year?  Do you have to be a UK resident? We are Spanish residents but hire cars when we go back to the UK and the insurance is very costly now.

Thank you for any help you can give us.

Which company and airport do you usually use via rentals website hirecar? And which company do you buy your annual excess from? I pay about that for a weeks full insurance at centauro car hire Corvera - but am keen not to have the hassle of forensic examination of the car on return which might happen if I don’t take out their full insurance - I have heard lots of horror stories re Goldcar and had a never again experience myself when I book through Easyjet and flew into Alicante - the fear upselling to an elderly couple in front of me was appalling!

Thanking in advance

We took our excess car insurance from AIG (Ireland) - it cost €60, much cheaper way of doing it. Btw, Gold Car in Almeria do take a block of €1,200 which is refunded once they are satisfied all is in order with the returned car. Another thing about Gold Car is that they now operate under a new name Intercar so when you book through Intercar you don't know until you take the car that it's actually Gold Car you are dealing with. We fell into that trap recently & I'm pretty sure the name change is because of bad publicity to do with Gold Car. We were pretty angry when it happened but happily no incidents occurred and all ended satisfactorily but it's an underhand way of doing business.

I have also read lots of info on this topic and have similar questions, was just going to search the forum for previous posts on this very subject in fact. Having just got a quote from Questor for £41.99 for the year is this all I need along with my UK car insurance, I just collect the car and opt for no additional insurance from the car hire company? Seems too easy...how can Questor keep paying the ridiculous claims that the car hire companies come up with?

Thanks for all your comments, so without taking out the yearly insurane, and being questioned and having a block put on my card, whom is best to book with?

Doyouspain online looks like it is cheap and you can have extra insurance of some sort, but still worried about all the catches?

With doyoudospain- the insurance you take covers the excess but goldcar still block €1200 on your credit card. If there was any damage gold car would use the excess amount and then you would claim it back through the doyoudospain policy. The only way to not have any money blocked with goldcar is to take out their expensive insurance.  Hope this helps
