We are coming out from the UK in March next year, Covid willing!  We are looking for advice on where to stay etc.  Are the bars and restaurants open as normal by then?  We are hoping to buy in the future so are coming out for a month to try before we buy.   Trying to decide between Mojacar area or Roquetas.  Anyone got any pros or cons for either please??

Many thanks

Matthew

Try Before You Buy - Good Tactics! and they will pay off.

I know little about Roquetas and I have only passed through on a few occasions so I'll leave somebody else make the case for RdM.

I've lived on and off in Mojacar Playa so my view would be biased, but here's the case:-

1. Mojacar Playa is low rise except for two hotel complexes at either end 3 miles apart.

2. You have a choice of airports:- Almeria, Alicante, Murcia International, Málaga (in order of my liking).

3. The local mayor has banned drinking alcohol in public and for stag/hen occasions the showing off of lewd items in public is prohibited and enforced by the local police.

4. Local transport is good and cheap.

5. No strip clubs or Bar Street.

6. There are 3 big supermarkets as good as you'll find anywhere.

7. In the off season Mojacar Playa is inhabited 50/50 by expats and Spaniards. You don't need to be able to speak Spanish as English is spoken throughout.

8. Mojacar Pueblo (town perched on top of a small mountain with magnificent views for miles around, streets cobbled and decorated with flowers) is within 1.5 miles and a gem of the area.

9. Local markets are good Mojacar Pueblo, Vera, Garrucha, Carboneras all accessible by local transport @ €1.20 per adult.

10. Plenty of opportunities to rent out your apartment/house/duplex/villa if you wish.

11. Clincher for me:- Many Brits who've bought there previously owned property in other Costas.

12. Costa Almeria has the warmest and driest temps of all of mainland Spain.

13. Choice of Spanish, French, Italian, Asian, Argentinian, Colombian cuisine and the Brit places are good too. No McDonalds and No Burger King.

14. The Paséo (long promenade walk) has been extended and is on the level.

Contra View:- (a) The further you go back from the beach, the more difficult the hills can become.

(b) You could live near a member of the Panama Hat Brigade - God help you, if you do.

(c) I can't think of anything more against the area.

hi Becs

Is this a holiday home or a permanent home?

If its a holiday home Matthew has covered all bases. If you are considering a permanent move there are some other things to consider.

regards,

Becs

How could I forget the deity of Mojacar, Mojacar Playa and every other place on coastal Spain? They come with the territory. There's nothing wrong with the cats - It's the people who feed them and refuse to clean up after them and come on forums such as this pontificating as to how "we" normal people should admire "them" abnormal people who'd let feral cats share a table with them. And of course fail to clean up their mess.
