Hi All, I was hoping to move to Roquetas de Mar but I've been told it is a    ghost town from October to April....Is this true? Do most of the restaurants and stores close, is it an active town during those months?

I would like recommendations please of other areas where people live all   year round and is not a ghost town in winter, if Roquetas is unsuitable.

Thank you, any advice would really help.

Hi LadyTee,

My parents have lived between UK and Roquetas for 14 years, usually coming home in November and returning to Spain in February. Roquetas is quieter during the winter months but by no means a 'ghost town's. Restaurants and bars are still open, but close generally earlier than summer months, likewise with the Regalo shops, on Avd. de Mediterraneo they close at 9pm (shops) bars and restaurants stay open til usually 11pm, sometimes later at weekend and during festivals. We bought there in May last year and visited in March this year over Easter, we found plenty to do and all our favourite bars and restaurants were open and it was lovely weather too. The weather has been unseasonably poor this winter, but I think everywhere has to be honest. I hope you've not been put off visiting over winter, you'll not regret going to Roquetas, it's a lovely place and I've found the locals very friendly too.

Hi,

We have been living here for 14 years and during the wintermonths,  november to beginning of Feb. the hotels are closed.  We have retired people staying here for 5 to 6 moths.  Restaurant are open.  We do not like the summer months because it is to busy, cannot get anywhere because of too many cars.  During the summer months you get this "summer shops"  People rent a place for just 3 months and then leave.  The established shops are open all year round.

Roquetas is a very nice place to live.

Hope this was usefull to you.

Ria

We have visited the Almeria City area from 1st January to 30th March each winter for the last three years, plus our travels have spread out into the Cabo de Gata and beyond.  Everywhere is quieter in the winter and is by no means dead, but I can understand that someone who is used to the hustle and bustle of a summer season might think so!  The weather gradually gets warmer from January onwards, and as March gets closer more and more restaurants open up, especially for Easter and the various carnivales in February.  If you have a car you can drive around to get more variety.  I’m not really familiar with Roquetas itself but I am with regard to Cabo de Gata.  Let me know if you’d like the info on favourite places we have found in that large park area, which is very close to Roquetas. Enjoy!
