State Pensions paid to us in Spain 🇪🇸 will continue to be updated annually... until 2022. After that uprating will depend on negotiations with Spain. Why? What has Spain to do with British pension payments?

~ Announced by U.K. Govt today ~

“The government is sending out letters outlining that even if we leave without a deal, pensions for those resident in the EU will be uprated for a further 3 years – an increase of at least 2.5% annually for the duration of this Parliament, worth up to £200 a year per person.

”And pensioners will be told they do not need to do anything to continue receiving their State Pension. During the 3-year period, the UK government plans to negotiate a new arrangement with the EU to ensure that uprating continues.“

They mean that it depends on Spain acting similarly with expat Spanish in the UK.  It's a little puzzling because most British in Spain worked all their lives in Britain and came to Spain to retire and most Spanish UK residents went to Britain to find work and therefore will have British pensions. There might be a catch somewhere.

I think they are referring to the fact that no govt can bind its successor. So the 2017 Parliament is due to end in 2022. Any subsequent Parliament or govt may cease to uprate pensions, after all in the 2017 election the May manifesto would not commit to maintaining the Triple Lock.

But the puzzle remains: uprating depends on Britain alone, it’s a U.K. policy decision, nothing to do with Spain, and affects all U.K. state pensioners inc those in Spain.

Incidentally, the DWP recently released figures for U.K. state pensioners living in Spain. It’s around 70,000 or about 20% of the British citizens living in Spain.

No " seemingly " changes Darius, agreement for the next three years from the UK Gov already agreed with Spain.

Posted from Gov website to stop the worrying speculation from some Brits living permanently in Spain.

This type of agreement has happened regularly with EU for years nothing to do with Brexit.

Speculation?

Unlikely to change at the end of three years like the last three year period or the one before that.

Keep smiling lets enjoy our life in Spain we are so fortunate.

That was the original govt announcement I quoted from. Yes, the only area of speculation is the relevance of the Spanish govt to U.K. pensions uprating after 2022.

“And pensioners will be told they do not need to do anything to continue receiving their State Pension. During the 3-year period, the UK government plans to negotiate a new arrangement with the EU to ensure that uprating continues.“

Pensioners registered with the DWP should have by now received a text on their phones  as follows;

"You will carry on getting your UK state pension when the UK leaves the EU on 31 October. Visit https://www.gov.uk/brexit-pensions to find out more."

My Wife and I both received the above text last week.

Also the DWP are sending out letters to all Pensioners in Spain over the next few weeks.
