Post-Transition income requirements for Expats (immigrants) from Britain

Yow.  It’s going to cut down on people retiring here - and as for moving here with a job .... 32k ? *ouch*

Very useful information, thank you.  Looks like I'll just stay with holding onto my long-term rental  and make regular visits when I stay for a few weeks at a time.   I could not meet those financial requirements, if they are similar for a single person.  Too stressful.

You would not have to meet those requirements. Because you have an Irish passport. Ireland is still in the EU.

It's a relief to know that.   I only went and got the Irish passport when the Brexit thingy started up.   I had my UK one.  My son went to work and live in Almeria and I started to visit him, until then I had never thought of going anywhere in Spain.

Is that level of income required for one person who is retired or is that for someone in employment?

It’s the standard income requirement for any individual citizen from a non-EU country (post Transition) that wants to live in Spain 🇪🇸- whether retired here, working here, or as part of a couple of a family here, etc. (If it’s a couple or family coming here the income requirement for the second and subsequent family members is less).

Once the UK is outside the Transition period you’ll only be allowed to stay 90 days in every 180 days. And you won’t be allowed to work here without a visa. Unless you have obtained formal legal residency in Spain before 31.12.20.

Like many that are uncertain what to do you really need to choose where you want to live. In other words, your home base cannot be in two countries. Once Transition ends if you have not already obtained Residency in Spain you will have to first apply for a visa if you want to permanently relocate here. To do so you will need to supply proof of healthcare insurance and income.

As stated in the original post pleasenote that the proof of income jumps up dramatically after the transition period.

Quite a few at present live here long term, some also work here - without obtaining legal resident status. They ignore the law and hope not to de detected. Such illegal ‘tourist overstayers’ are now much more likely to be found out now the U.K. has left the EU, and they will be heavily fined. Anyone committing an offence here might also have to leave the country...

There will be no ‘special Visa’ for Brits. Leave did actually mean Leave ...

Will only happen in 2021 if UK leaves without a deal. The Spanish economy needs Expats moving to Spain to live and sending their pensions.

So will change the rules for UK expats moving to Spain to live so they will not be affected by the £30k rule.

With the greatest of respect ... that is a fantasy expats have been trying to sell themselves a long long time.  Spain can happily manage without income from UK expats, beings UK expats are only the fourth largest nationality moving to Spain, behind Romanians, Moroccans and South Americans - and a very VERY long way at that.  Give or take there’s 360k Brits here.  At last count there was around 1.1 million Romanians and 900k Moroccans.

You can bank that there will be no “special arrangement” made for Brits who arrive post Transition period.

Many expats honestly believe “they need us more than we need them” .... which in part led to the debacle that is Brexit. In reality .... “they” don’t.  They really REALLY don’t need us more than we need them.

The restrictions Chrisso outlines come into effect irrespective of whether a trade deal Is agreed or not - ETIAS is being introduced in 2021, and that alone will catch an awful lot of overstayers.

If you truly believe “they need us more than we need them” and that Spain will make “special arrangements” for UK arrivals post transition period and are planning your future accordingly ... then you are in for a VERY unpleasant surprise I’m afraid.
