Hi all, we have just booked a late flight from LGW to Almeria airport in April, the flight arrives at Almeria airport at 20:15, I cannot find any car hire desks that seem to be open at this hour? Does this sound right? I always assumed if a flight was coming in there would be a desk open for car rentals? Any help would be very much appreciated :)

If I've arrived late, when the desks are closed, I usually book a hotel close to airport and go back early following morning to pick up a car.

Hi Sarah88.

Always look up blablacar.es whenever you're in that situation. (Not always available, but you'll know in 5 minutes if you go on their website).

If there is anyone travelling from near the airport to near your place they will let you know. You can expect the cost will be similar to the bus fare for the corresponding journey.

If you wish you can specify non-smoking, female drivers etc.

Good luck

Many thanks for this I shall take a look :)

I’ve also had a look at Zest hire cars which seem pretty recognised, thanks again for your help :)

Hi Sarah88

There are a number of car hire "consolidators" in the market, including Zest, which you mentioned, also Rentalcars.com, carjet.com.

Before you start looking them up, write down your requirements on a piece of paper  - 2/4 doors, size of car, petrol/diesel, unlimited mileage and if you're willing to pay to cancel your excess, etc etc.

Then plug your requirements into each of these websites and see who offers the best deal. Phone up the company offering the best deal and see how much you can shave off the price. Things are very quiet in the tourist business and there are many bargains to be had just for the asking.

If any of the companies gives you a hard time, then hang up. If they give you grief as a new customer, imagine how they'll treat you if you break down an hour later.

Rule of thumb if you're looking at a car about the size of a Ford Fiesta, for example, think in terms of about €10 per day with a minimum of €50, full-full, unlimited mileage, payment by credit card. (For longer rentals it should be nearer €8 per day.)

Good luck

Many thanks for taking the time to message me back, I shall take a look, I’ve always used Rentalcars however none of the usual companies are coming up and appear to close at 8pm. Thanks again very helpful

My daughter and husband had this problem with a very late arrival into Almeria Airport. They actually booked a car through their airline without any hassle.

Your first reply from Alicia11 gave you the solution. Although based in Mojacar - Costa Coches offer a meet and greet service at Almeria airport. Give them your flight details both arrival and return and complete all formalities online with them beforehand and they will take the car to the airport to greet your arrival and have you on road without queues and drop back to greeter when you go back home. No need for office to be open at airport.
