I have an older HP Q laptop. When I try to boot up, I get message that if I continue, I may lose data.

I was thinking of downloading a Linux OS on it to bring it new life.

Trouble is when I boot it to get on Internet will it crash and be unusable.

I have seen a youtube of a training instructor doing this with an old xp laptop, bought for $20 on ebay, and it worked well for him.

Can anyone advise me how to proceed?

Hi Maureen,

I am Dominic, I am from Ireland..

Have you tried booting the laptop into safe mode ?

If so what happens?

Hello Dominic, Thanks for responding.

No because it gives the message that if I continue, I may lose Data.

I am not very techie, so some messages frighten me, because I do not know what consecouences I will create.

So when I turn it on is when the message appears, should I just continue to see if I get the safe mode message? Or is there some way to get that?

Maureen

No problem.

It really depends on the issue that's causing the error.

What operating system is the laptop running ? Windows 7 etc....

Hi,

I just turn it on and it says the system has detected a cooling fan is not operating correctly.

when I tried putting in password, it does not take it .Probably because I have not used it for about 3-4 years.I tried using my microsoft password but that doesn't work.

It is a HP compaq. I was thinking of putting a linux program on it to give it new life, but would have to get it online to download it.

Sould I take it to worton's and ask them to look at it. Maybe they can access it without passwords etc. If I could get it working I could restore it to factory settings.

What do you think?

OK.

So we know then it's probably the hardware that's causing the error.

If the information is important on the laptop and you need to recover. I would continue to boot up past the error. If you're afraid then while backing up the information I would sit a fan close to the machine to keep it cool.

Seeing as its an old laptop. It's more than likely that the fan might be lose or needs a new one.

There is also a possibility that a driver isn't working correctly.

If you aren't very tech savvy I wouldn't be installing a Linux distro.

Stick to Windows as it's much more user friendly for the average user.

I would try this first and if not bring to a store to get it repaired if it's worth repairing.

It will save you a lot of time and effort. If you haven't a backup and recovery disc for the laptop then installing drivers and so on can be very time consuming.

These things are easier to pin point the issue when in front of the laptop.

I hope I've helped enough as to that you have a diagnosis and some ideas on how to restore.

If you have any other question I'll happily help. I only registered to help yourself out

Thanks Dominic, I hpe you will stay in the forum, as I have a friend with problems too, and it is always helpful even just to chat the problem out with someone else who is more competent than ourselves.

Have a good day.

Maureen

No problem Maureen. I'm in Roquetas until June for now. Hopefully if I can find work I plan to stay.

I hope so too. I love it here.

Maybe you could keep me in mind if you know of work going. Doesn't have to be computer work, I'm open to putting a hand to anything 😁
