Hello. Has anyone had any experience of travelling by car from Santander/Bilboa to Almeria with a dog? If so, did you stop off overnight on the way? Recommendations/advice please. TIA.

Hi
We take this route twice a year, overnight stop 3.5 hrs south of santander, junction 99 of motorway south of burgas. Hotel mirasierra, at Santo tome del Puerto, very clean, dog friendly and great walks adjacent. We always recommend and most enjoy

How far in advance do you book? Seems every time we try they have no dog cabins.

We have total flexibility so leave it till 2 weeks before, then ring each every day. We're quite happy with the kennels

Sorry have never done this before. You say kennels. Does that mean you do not have to have a dog friendly cabin?? Thanks.

the boats have kennels for your dog but it depends on your dog as to whether this is ok or not, some get very distressed and you can go and get them and take them to the dog area and no where else on board. Dog friendly cabins mean you can leave it in the cabin.

I regularly do this trip with my dog, and like the others, stop at a dog friendly hotel en route. Booking.com has a filter enabling you to see this. As for dog-friendly cabins, they’re like hens’ teeth on the Spanish routes. Before now, I’ve tried to book one within 3 hours of booking becoming open for that crossing, only to find they’ve all gone. Sometimes you can do better by calling Brittany Ferries rather than relying on the website which is a bit clunky and long-winded. Large kennels can also be limited, and the small kennels on the Cap Finistère are very small. Also I’ve just discovered to my horror that many of the sailings are now being cancelled. It doesn’t specifically state this in the website, but you may find that all the crossings for one particular boat are described as “full”. When I queried this with BF, they agreed they had been cancelled. It seems the main one going from Spain at the moment is the Galicia between Portsmouth and Santander. While this may improve once Covid restrictions drop, I suspect we may well see some
reductions in frequency as a result of the reduction in freight transport following Brexit.
