Hello. Hoping someone can clarify. Fully aware that a health cert is required to travel from the Uk to Spain with a dog. We intend on staying a couple a months twice a year. Is it possible to get a pet passport whilst in Spain and would that be more cost effective?

TIA.

Hi we got our pet passports done in uk as we needed them to travel with our dog and 3 cats and also needed to have there rabies injection which was then put on the passport as proof. The rabies injection is now a yearly requirement in Spain.

Your dog needs to be chipped and rabies jab so it is advisable to have this done in the UK, before you arrive in Spain as already said it is law that dogs have a rabies jab once a year that has to be registered in their pets passport. If you should be stopped by the Guardia  for any reason and it is found your dog does not have a rabies jab, you will be fined. I would get all this done in the UK, then you are up and running when you get here. Hope this helps

Hi Jenny.   but what “ pets passport”  as it’s not recognised any more ?   Is it just on the AHC.  Animal Health Certificate. or are they still allowed to use the passport for the stickers ?     I’m shocked our pets need rabies “Every” year as we are coming from a Rabies free country and the vacs last two to three years!    It’s news to me this morning and more things and dates to keep on top of 🙈.  I think I may be fortunate here as  My two tiny Romanian rescue dogs have EU issued Romanian passports so I would have thought  I don’t need an AHC, as it’s just replacing a passport but  will get one anyway just in case  Found this too,  it may help some people.

**BREXIT UPDATE** If traveling to Spain from the UK, you will now require an animal health certificate (AHC). If your dog’s EU pet passport was issued within the EU, it will still be valid as long as your dog’s vaccinations are up to date. However, if your dog’s pet passport was issued in GB, it will no longer be valid.    I just can’t find where it says. Rabies jab. Every Year !

Hi  L181SKY, we are talking cross purposes here, sorry my fault, my dogs have Spanish Pets Passports and as you have pointed out they are still valid. I came to Spain 10 years ago and even then you had to have your dog Vaccinated against Rabies to abide by Spain law. My dogs at that time, had a rabies jab done in the UK that lasted 2 years, the first time I took them to the vets in Spain the vet insisted they have another one because the 2 and 3 year jab isn't recognised in Spain. Spanish Red tape is a nightmare and Bretix has made it even worse.

Yes.   I brought my wee Westie in 2003 and had to too.  All the info available seems to be for residents bringing their pets to live in Spain not for holidays .   The question now is , I wonder if ,simply  because  we are coming into Spain from the U.K. with  a fully up to date Romanian passport will they ask for a AHC too 🙈.   It’s all so confusing, I will ask the Official vet and put the info on here  re rabies yearly too.  Trudi

Spain, especially Andalucia, like to do a Rabies jab annually. We arrived in 2018 from U.K. to live here with our dog, after he had had a three-year rabies vaccination course back in the UK. This year we obtained a Spanish pet passport and he had his first annual rabies jab. The cost was a good deal less than the three jabs across two months that he had required in the U.K. previously.

It’s still confusing.  you are talking about. a Spanish passport and so a yearly jab as that’s their rules as they have Rabies and  that’s fine. Any time we have come, the passport shows rabies are all up to date and has not been a problem being that the passports we have are Romanian and not issued in Spain.    🙈 it’s such a worry nowadays

Spain does not have rabies! The one year rabies jab in Andalucia is because of the proximity of the North African coast, where there is an enhanced risk.
