Beware Processionary Caterpillars
Super helpful member
Processionary caterpillars were seen here in Roquetas urbanisation by us this morning for the first time, whilst out dog walking. These caterpillars are extremely toxic to dogs, just touching the caterpillar can cause the dog serious injury and even death.
They swarm in ‘procession’ from March to May and live on certain species of pine tree. The pine processionary is a moth of the family Thaumetopoeidae and known as one of the most destructive species to pines and cedars in Southern Europe. The urticating hairs of the caterpillar larvae cause harmful reactions in humans and other mammals.
