Hi.

I have had an offer accepted on a property that includes 380 olive trees. Can anyone advise me about what to do with them. I have been informed that you can employ people to harvest them.

HELP

Hello

The olives will need to be picked around November, and take them to the olive press. The one I’ve used is in Albox, but there may be one closer to Purchena.

I’m sure you will be able to hire workers to pick the olives, but guess you will need transport too.

Regards

Hi

Thank for your reply.

In your experience how honest are the local farmers? We didn't go looking for an olive farm we just fell in love with the house. We won't be moving to Spain for another couple of years so we would have to leave the harvesting in the hands of a local although we will be making regular trips. Could you recommend anyone who could help? We are coming over the beginning of May so would like to meet with anyone with experience in these matters.

Thank you once again

Kind regards

Steve

Hi

I don’t live local to Purchena sorry; maybe you could ask the present owners whether or not they use workers themselves? Either way, if you are just visiting at times, then you will need someone to oversee the olives for you ie irrigate, prune etc.

Good luck

Hi We also bought a property with loads of olive and almond trees on it, one of the local farmers looks after it for us, ploughing it, harvesting, pruning, in return he had the produce,he always offers us some once harvested. It works out well for us as no money is exchanged, we don't have the bother of farming it, and he is happy with what he gets for the produce. So I would ask around your local area, see if there is a local farmer that would do a similar deal with you.

Hope this helps.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

I have been quoted that the olives could yield as much as 10K Euros. How many trees do you have?

Kind regards

Steve.

We were getting about 50c per Kg for our olives this year - no idea if that's good or bad, but it was our first year of trying and we were just dipping a toe.  Therefore if you are going to get €10k then you need to get 20 tonnes of olives to the press, which I would say is more than a hobby.
