I am in the process of getting my residency but need some prescription medications. Obviously not registered with GP etc. Can anyone advise how I can get my medicines.

Also once resident I know we have to wait a year before we register with GP. What do people do in that time ?

Thanks again for any advice. Seem to be going round in circles gor an answer

Some medicines in spain are available over the counter without need for a prescription, check with your local farmacia.  Otherwise you'll need to see a private doctor to get a prescription until such times as you are in the Spanish health system...

Also if you are not of retirement age with access to the S1 form from the UK then you'll not be able to get Spanish health care without paying into the system...

Thank you for your reply

We are not state pension age and up until recently we had always got our medicine over the counter whenever we were in Spain. That changed last week for us hence the question

Do you know a private doctor we could go too?

I don't know of a doctor in Tijola but there are two here in Mojacar, Dr Jose is in the medical practice in the Parque Comercial and there is a new private practice on the road out towards Garrucha near Mimis bar who has been highly recommended,  both would require you to make an appointment...

You could also Google "medical practice near me" which will list both private and public, there maybe a private doctor closer to you than Mojacar...

Have to say the availability of medicines over the counter varies enormously between pharmacies in Spain.  If you go to one in an isolated rural area, particularly if you take a copy of your U.K. prescription sheet, they are far more likely to let you buy the medication than ones in a city.  It does of course depend on just what the drugs are - opiates would obviously not fall into this category!

Also I have found appointments at private Policlinicas to be far cheaper than you might expect in the U.K.  Although I am in fact on the Spanish health system, I often go to my local policinica as I can get a rapid appointment, always see the same doctor and only pay between 35-40€ for the consultation!
