Hiya I'm new to this and hope someone can help. Myself and my husband are thinking about moving to the area. We have both been elite security officers but now we are taking a step back from our careers and looking for jobs in your area so we can spend time together because the jobs we have is 12hr shifts 5/6 days aweek. Thanks Wendy x

Morning Wendy,

I think you will struggle to get a job in retail, or in any sector, without the language.

There are British food shops and bars but also a lot of British looking for jobs there.

If possible try to do an intensive Spanish language course before you leave the U.K.

All the best.

Try going on line and finding  'Duolingo'.  It is free and fun to do , you can do a few minutes at a time and learn without noticing, and then practice with each other.  It is based on South American Spanish, but that is not a big drawback. Then when lots has seeped into your brain, do that intensive course  and bingo, you are on the way to navigating Spain and jobs.

As others have said, in the South of Spain, you do need Spanish.  We have a Wellness centre and Yoga studio in Vera, and 99.9% of our customers are Spanish who speak little or no English (we actually offer English lessons there as well!!) - point being, without Spanish you will find it difficult.

As suggested, there are “pockets” that are more English than Spanish, but then competition for jobs in those areas will be greater.

An exception could be one of the big tourist areas, such as Malaga;  English will be a requirement there because of the tourist trade; the trade-off is working in a very large purely tourism driven area .....

Un saludo, Darío

Prospanish daily free lessons on YouTube are excellent for beginners - no boring grammar just building simple useful sentences - has worked very well for me!

Buena suerte (good luck)
