Hi  my name is Dawn, we are currently looking at the area of Palomares to buy a property. My Hubby was there a few weeks ago and we both hope to come over within the next month or so to look again and get a feel for the area. I have a few questions so would be grateful for your help. I was reading about the plane crash of 1966 and was wondering about the contamination issues has it all been dealt with and cleaned up? How long does it take to drive to Garrucha/Mojacar? Are there any fitness classes in Palomares itself such as Zumba,BLT, Body conditioning, pilates, walking clubs? Are there any social groups at all day or evening? I'm 58 and hubby is approaching 60 but we both like to keep active and are young at heart! Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Hi as for the radiation risk in the area you will find life is as if it never happened and not much in depth information regarding its effects on the populous now. Save for a fenced off area the rest is agricultural land still with the exception of developments for apartments for sale and the shops bars and restaurants.  It's a lovely spot with a thriving mixed international community

While we bought in Mojacar Playa, I have a soft spot for Palomares. You will probably suffer more radiation problems from your mobile phone and microwave cooker than from the ordnance on the aircraft downed back in the day.

Before you sign anything for purchase of property visit the area and live there for about five weeks in the off season. Believe me, after five weeks you'll know if the area is for you.

Hi from Mojacar Playa,

If you type in Palomares to Garrucha or Mojacar you will get distance and times for car, cycle, walk and bus not that the latter is much in evidence.

If you go to the on-line version of The Almeria Focus Magazine and Directory ( monthly) & look after about P. 106 you have all the clubs, activities, etc. You can get the hard copy magazine free from places like Vera Iceland.

Yep, lots of fields.

Have had occasion to visit & deliver to Palomares episodically and, remember this a personal opinion, I/we find the old town scruffy and claustrophobic and some of the newer developments no better than ghettos, thrown up to cash in on the one time property boom. Still property is cheaper there. Just wouldn't suit us. Now all the Palomares residents can pile on.

The previous poster had it right. Rent first and if poss in Summer & Winter. The difference to this part of the world is amazing.

Hope it works out,

Bob and Sandra

Thank you Bob and Sandra for your feedback. I agree, it is your opinion and we are all going to have different ones but appreciate your honesty. We have visited Mojacar and Garrucha and surrounding areas at different times of the year and love the area. It may be difficult to rent long term at the moment as we are both still working (although I am hoping to retire early sooner rather than later!) but will certainly consider it.

I am going to check out the magazine tonight. Really appreciate your reply, thank you!

Thank you Netty for your reply, Nice to hear that there is a good community. We will continue to research and hopefully get to "stand on the land" soon!

Thanks, Dawn and John

Thank you Matthew for your advice. We too like Mojacar but are in the process of checking out surrounding area and came across Palomares. I would love to try before we buy so that may be something we will look into.

My sister and brother in law are moving to Mojacar in October and are currently finalising a rental property. This makes me eager to relocate sooner rather than later!

Thanks again

Dawn and John

A pleasure. Strangely enough I am.over there tomorrow to see about removing a Bougainvillea for someone trying.to sell.her apt. Concerned it may be unsightly.

Best Wishes,

Bob and Sandra

We have a property in Palomares that we rent out and we really like the town. There are good restaurants, bars, it's walking distance to the beach and only 15 minutes to Moacar with Vera Playa and Garrucha closer. Whatever you hear about the nuclear bombs from the 60s we don't all glow a bright yellow and the contaminated area is only about 2 square metres. The commercial vegetable growers are very close to the village centre and supply Mercadona, Lidl etc as well as send the produce overseas. Would they be allowed to do that if there was a problem?
