Hi, my wife & I are seriously considering a permanent move to the area, I am a

Insulin dependent diabetic under retirement age, I get free prescriptions in the UK

Can anyone give any information on how this works in Spain, would I still get free

medications ?

Thank you in advance,

Ian

Hi,

You will need private medical cover. This is essential when you apply for residencia.

I have a friend who was here on holiday and she forgot her insulin and as far as I can remember it was almost € 80 for a pen, that was a few years ago.

If you search google you could get a few quotes for health insurance to help you in your decision.

Hi,

Is your wife of pensionable age as otherwise Private Medical Insurance as stated. Actually all.of us are waiting the final formal outcome of Brexit. So far it's Political promises.

Under EU rules you are only allowed 1 GP in Europe. We shall be out so will.that entitle us to retain a GP in UK? Also the questions of continuing UK contributions!!!!!

Another complication is that Insurance Companies normally don't cover existing Medical.conditions so this will need researching as well.

Season's Greetings,

What is the position if you are retired please? Nor insulin dependent but on long term heart medication.

If you are from the UK and pensionable age you can get an S1 form from DWP. That is proof of health cover that is required by the Spanish government when you apply for residencia, which you should apply for if you intend to live her permanently.

Hi,

Currently if you are retired & in receipt of OA Pension then you apply for Residencia providing the forms from UK DWP..You then sign on with a GP although may be allocated one. Then you are prescribed medication as with UK.

You can initially use your EHIC or purchase OTC at any pharmacy. We generally can't be bothered to see GP and just buy our meds.

Season's Greetings,

Dr. Bob and Sandra

S1 form is proof of income !,

UK pension is usually above the minimum income required by the Spanish government, if youre pensionable age you can sign on with a local gp or a doctor at youre local hospital, then youre doctor can compare the meds you use and tell you the Spanish equivalent usually after blood and urine samples at a local clinic, partner and myself live in a small village called Urcal and our local clinical is Santa Maria de Nieva,

You'll be able to get youre meds whilst youre waiting for youre full blown medical card via a temporary form from youre doctors surgery, then once you've got youre medical card which youre gp will help you get via the local social security offices, usually takes anything from a few weeks or a couple of months, it's a credit card sized item, you'll need it to "sign in" with youre doctor as well as at the pharmacia to get youre meds, if they dont have what you need they can usually obtain the missing item that same day.

You as a pensionistas pay just 10% of the prescription cost. Partners dad had a bad fall not long ago in the village and the ambulance took just 15 maybe 20 minutes to get here, which coincidentally is the time it takes to get from our local town of Huercal Overa to here and he was assessed and in the local hospital inside 30 minutes.

He got all the treatment needed on his Ehic including hospital treatment, the insurers were no more helpful nor use than I can think, disgusting doesnt even come close and during one call was moved to complain that because the call had gone on so long, partly due to her scripted conversation and dead pan answers, she moaned that she'd missed her tea break !!!

We have nothing but praise for the Spanish health service.
