Hi all, after looking at tijola and surrounding areas we have decided that we would prefer to be near the coast, could anyone tell us what Palomares is like. Thanks

Hi Guys.
Good call. Only been through a few times on way between properties. Thought the main town was ghastly, but that's just me. Someone posted about Palomares a short time ago re. The old A Bombs the Americans dropped decades ago. Look at.Villaricos & Carboneras as well.
Quite like both of those but you really do need to visit.

I wish people would stop bringing up the 2 square metres of land that is still contaminated from the 1966 incident and therefore out of bounds as though it's some sort of major health hazard. The locals and expats hate the constant references to it although the Cuevas town hall don't do themselves any favours and bring it up regularly to try to get the Americans to remove the remaining soil. It gives the impression that Palomares is a dangerous place to live which of course is utter rubbish as the mass of commercial vegetable growers right close in to the village centre will attest - they wouldn't be allowed to be there if there was a problem. And Tesco, Lidl, Mercadona etc wouldn't sell be able to sell you that last lettuce you bought and eat would they? Don't forget that 1.6 million people now live in Hiroshima and Nagasaki so 2 square metres of contaminated soil on the outskirts of Palomares doesn't really compare.
We have a property in Palomares that is just coming up for rental and it's a great small town: we are walking distance to the centre of town, restaurants and bars - Monika's is great and Paco, her husband, sells lovely fresh vegetables there every Sunday - there are shops, a pharmacy, hairdresser, banks, a thriving campsite and other services. You can walk or cycle down to the beach where there is a good new bar, Akua, which has a good menu. There are cycle tracks into Villaricos and buses to Cuevas del Almazora, Vera and Vera Playa.
So to answer your question, I think Palomares is great.

Thanks Rob, we were at Akua today. We are going back to palomares tomorrow to check out the town. If it is as nice as it looked as we drove through we will definitely have a look at what property is out there.

Try San Juan de Los Terreros too. It is up and coming. Lovely seafront and big sandy beach. Churinguitas along the front and lots of restaurants. I really liked Carboneras but the choice of limited flights to Almeria put us off and decided to buy nearer to Murcia and new airport will be about same distance plus Alicante and Almeria as alternative options. It’s only 10mins from biggest town Águilas. Good luck with your search

I dont think a true description of Palomares Village is "gastly"
I have seen far worse. It is a very convenient village with a couple if Banks and 3 supermarkets, bakery, restaurants and bars.
Its also a walk away from the beach.
It's all in the eye of the beholder.
It's horses for courses but there appeared to be too many with vested interests reporting.
We thought that GHASTLY ( our opinion ) balanced the reporting.
Apologies to those with a vested interest or who reside there but that's the remit of a Forum.
Best Wishes,
