I think the various respondents offering advice have understood the situation quite clearly.  You appear to have bought "furniture" to which you have no legal right of access.  

You said at the outset that the villa was "being rented with the option to purchase at a reduced price from the owner".  I infer from that that you paid not just for the furniture (hence my inverted commas) but also for the option to purchase (€30k sounds like one heck of a lot of second hand TVs, sofas and beds).  You have subsequently decided, probably for very good reason, not to go ahead with the purchase, so your option premium is essentially lost.  You may have lost €30k, but if you are correct then you have saved yourself a lot more - how much were you thinking of spending on a villa that you subsequently believe to be an illegal build?  Give yourself a pat on the back and breathe a sigh of relief.

Hi Biggles,

Are you 100% certain that the renters you bought the furniture from actually owned the furniture, that it was theirs to sell. Did you come to the arrangement with the renters in front of the villa owner????? Because in Valencia where I use to live there were reports of renters moving into villa's stripping the place of everything (including doors and bathroom) and then doing a runner. or like in your case selling all the furniture and then doing a runner. Only when the owner went back into their villa, were they aware.

I am wondering if this is why the Spanish Owner is so adamant in not giving it to you. Because its his.

I hope this gets sorted soon for you, it must be driving you mad, it would me.

Biggles do you have any paperwork regarding your possessions or in other words any contractual clauses written in SPanish? Most Spanish  courts don't recognise English written contracts.

Can you explain a little more regarding what legal statements etc took place with the owners etc. In European law there are possibilities of enforcement but the documentation needs to be correct as previously stated the Spanish legal system is not the greatest neither their statute law or case law.
