Hi there

My partner and I are coming to Spain in August and have asked to view a couple of apartments in the area. We have never been to Almeria province let alone visit Palomares and was just wondering what it’s like to have holiday home/live there and should we have any concerns about that dreaded air accident back in the 60’s where some say it’s still risky? Not that this would stop us looking but just interested to know others thoughts on the matter

Thanks

if you've never been here then you'll be advised to rent somewhere and get a good look round as so many different options some suit others some will suit you.  Palamares has still got radioactive soil in areas which the USA are supposed to have removed but they are still waiting for that to happen.  I have never lived there but have visited and it wouldn't be my choice of where I would settle but that's me.  I'm sure others who have chosen to live there can give you info on that.

The area is lovely .

It's not really busy there is a nice village offering all required for living or holidaying ..

The beach is a walkable distance with a  beach  bar and safe swimming and life guard .

The fruit  and  veg is exported to the UK from the area.    If there were pollution this would not be allowed .

I have a holiday home there and havent as yet seen Green people with purple pickles on their back yet !    .

Pollution is monitored closely as are the residents .  No scare of any higher higher rates of cancer have ever been detected .

Most of the highly contaminated soil has been removed by the US years ago, however some  lower level soil still remains and is in a clearly marked/fenced area.

Unless you decide to go roll around in it you will be fine and probably get a higher 'dose rate' from granite in some areas of the UK.

Would I live there? Yes, I work in the nuclear industry in the UK and have no worries about the area around Palomares, there are some very nice little coves along the coast.

I nearly did,but at the time(20 years ago)it was too quite for me and I found a better property at the time near Antas

Alicia has good advice about renting and looking

We bought an apartment here off plan in 2003 through Angel Properties.

We love the village and have been coming to this area since 1986. Initially to Villaricos as my sister in law knew the Russells who built up the Almanzora group and actually bought the site of Desert Springs. I actually saw the table top  models of both Villaricos, and Desert Springs in Chetenham in 1988. They also had a model of the since abandoned Little Venice in the area.

We spent nearly two years looking around before deciding to buy in Palomares and have never regretted choosing this village. It has everything you need in walking distance

There were hardly any English back then but it is still spanish and not touristy like Villaricos and Mojacar.

I hope you find something suitable

Bob

Hi, we bought in Palomares last year on a really friendly, small complex. We have been backwards and forwards a lot and will be there this week. I am hoping to move permanently in October and looking forward to the adventure! Personally,I love the rustic feel of the area, the beach is a15 min walk away and there is enough in the village and surrounding area to keep me happy. I have yet to get a true feel of actually living there but so looking forward to it. The radiation factor doesn’t concern me, the farmers in the area seem to get a good healthy crop of whatever they are growing and apparently supply major supermarkets. Have a good look around when you come and take your time, I wish you all the best.
