In the case of any damage needing to be paid for, they take payment from your credit card and you have to reclaim from your UK policy.
All companies without exception will process the blocking deposit in your card. Best action is to buy your excess cover here. I use Questor and that gives me £6k cover which would more than cover any excess or payment. That then saves you having to buy their expensive additional cover. My annual policy costs £39 and covers two of us to drive. We visit Spain at least six times a year, so works out to be very good value.
Thanks, very helpful.

Steve said "All companies without exception will process the blocking deposit in your card." Actually that's not true. Al Andalus don't accept cards so can't block anything off your card. The Premium plan with Centauro (which we use at Murcia and occasionally Alicante or Malaga) also doesn't block anything off the card though their other cheaper plans do. I detest having money blocked off the card so will always use companies that don't.
When we fly into Almeria we use Avis and for that I have an excess policy from the UK from insuranceforcarhire.

If you purchase annual car hire insurance in the UK do the car hire companies still hold a deposit on your card and then ‘find’ a minuscule scratch or dent when you return the car? We often pick up hire cars at night when the poorly lit car parks make it impossible to photograph the car sufficiently clearly to be able to disprove their ridiculous claims.
Yes block still applied if you have your separate cover. You would be charged and then claim separately from your insurance.
Rob, useful information re Centauri. I also use them at Murcia and I quite like them. I’ll have to look at the option that you have described. Thank you...
Hi I would as suggested take out annual excess cover back in the UK, Martin Lewis of money saving expert has some good advice and kinks to some of the insurance companies who offer this insurance, most if not all car hire will hold a payment on your credit card so I would suggest that when you collect your car take photos of every panel and look for damage no matter how small, and before leaving the airport report anything that is not already marked on the diagram on the paperwork to the car hire personal, as there have been problems after the car has been dropped off and you find your card has been charged when you get home as this happened to a friend of mine and it took him 3 months to get his money back so be very carefull, I would also check out their fuel policy as they catch you with as well.
enjoy your time when your here good luck (doyouSpain are good)
