I am hoping for help from the community: I have a (holiday) house in Palomares Bajo. My husband and I are there for 2-5 weeks each summer, spring, autumn and winter. Across the street from our house, a dog (husky) is kept on a balcony. We have never seen this dog ever leave the balcony, he has a hut as accommodation on this max. 12m2 balcony, but nobody takes care of him. He seems to get food and water - but nobody ever takes him for a walk - the dog is completely isolated. Occasionally the balcony is cleaned - but this dog is completely wasting away there! Neighbours are seeing the bad situation of this dog als well - they tried to talk with us - but nobody seems to be able to take Andy action to help this poor dog.

Unfortunately, we do not yet speak enough Spanish to be able to talk to the spanisch owners about the dog's terrible situation and we are also afraid that as "foreigners" we might put our foot in our mouth. But the dog urgently needs help - who can I turn to? Even though we are in our home country (the Netherlands) at the moment and won't be back until April, I can't get the dog's fate out of my mind! Maybe there is someone here in this forum who is involved in animal welfare and can help.

Thank you very much and in the hope that someone can help!

Angel

Thanks a lot! Maybe an option - but Almeria is far away! But thank you for caring! Sorry - Just seen  it’s in Mojacar - not far away! Thank you so much!

This same organisation has another branch in Vera . Screenshot below. I am sure they will be able to advise . I don’t even know the area 😂. I’m only on this forum as I want to get to know it 😂. I am near Malaga , but the issue re dogs on balconies sadly occurs here . I just don’t understand why people get dogs to shut them on balconies 🤬.

Hi Angel,  Unfortunately this is all to common in Spain, as the dog is being fed and watered then most Spainish think this is OK, and there is no law that says the dogs has to be taken for a walk or have any company.  You could try going to the Guardia, but as I say as it is being fed and watered I doubt they will do much, if your lucky they might go and have a word with the owners, Then you could go to the town hall, try and speak to the Mayor.  Try the dog rescue charities in your area. What you really need is for someone that speaks spainish, preferably a local and ask them to ask the owners if you can have the dog, then you can rehome it.

I lived in Spain for 12 years and 2 months ago returned to the UK, and one of the reasons was the appalling treatment of animals. They will tell you they have laws, but no one acts on them.  Good luck, and thank you for trying to do something.

Hi Angel, Paws Patas dog kennel is in Los Galardos, Vanessa is the manager and they have in the past approached owners of dogs that are in distress or not looked after and asked them to sign them over to the kennels. You will find contact information for Vanessa/he kennels on the website. They are very full at the minute and short staffed but they never leave a dog behind and they're a no kill shelter. Might be worth dropping them a call to see if there's anything they can legally do.

I know the husky, yes he is very rarely taken for a walk and howls a lot.Similar situation just up the road with my neighbour who has a mastiff(?) and he never ever is taken out by the owner. The dog defecates on their upper terraza and it is covered in s**t and that stops me ever going up there.Another one of my neighbourswas up there and stormed around and gave the owner a right earful( en Espanol). The guy said he would sort it out but never has☹️Seems the Spanish don't look after their animals very much☹️☹️
